About
Roy at the age of 17 years began his musical career has a military bandsman playing the clarinet and flute later turning his hand to the saxophone which became his passion. Playing classical and military music Roy for four years studied both music and his chosen instrument the saxophone achieving the highest grades in both. After a short spell away from the scene Roy returned as one of the founder members of (The Legendary cotton club), the band played selective venues receiving great reviews and airplay on jazz FM with its own style of smooth jazz and soul.
Turning professional Roy started looking for more work, turning his hand to teaching saxophone and clarinet. He became the resident teacher at a north Yorkshire music school, later moving to private teaching from his own studio. At this point he joined the band (Absolutely) playing soul / motown / rock / and pop this proved to be a very successful periods and was in his own words “simply the best time ever”. Roy combined both gigging and teaching never forgetting his own grass roots beginnings. He joined a band called (Spot the Dog) playing in the local pubs of Darwin, Blackburn, and Burnley entertaining the locals and using the opportunity to raise money for good causes also giving some of his own students the experience of playing in a band. Roy boasts proudly of several saxophone players who have spent many long hours learning to play saxophone and who are working in bands today, he wishes them well for the future. During his time with Spot the Dog Roy met a great guitarist and formed the duo (Midnight Sax) a project which is still going today as a solo act.
In 1995 Roy formed his final band called (Back on Track) this full time pro band playing to northwest WMC proved to be just the ticket for Roy as a performer, and natural front man, taking on lead vocals as well as multi instrumentalist the band thrived with its clean cut image and cabaret act performing 4/5 gigs a week the band later renamed and became (Soul Input) brought in keys and a fantastic front girl called Kinisha which complemented and added more vocal versatility and professionalism (Still proud to be a friend many thanks)
Roy's work has taken him all over the country playing live, working with artist from TV shows such as (Star's in there eyes) his sound and his ability has been use by others in studio and as a session player and teacher. And is available for hire with his own solo act ( Midnight Sax)a combination of great backing tracks and live saxophone for your Weddings/parties/restaurants/and pubs playing many many great ballads from the jazz, blues, pop, and soul world, if you are looking for a sax player to feature on your CD demos or you need saxophone in your studio time or just need a sax player for your gig you can contact and hire him.
