“This review is from: Urbanator (Audio CD) If I had have blinked for a moment I likely would've missed this album completely. From the generic cover to the false looking logo in the upper left hand corner of the CD,it didn't seem the least of interest to me. That was until I was presented with the personnel involved. The violinist Michael Urbaniak has been someone I've known about only for a short time. But this came out in 1994 and I remember that era quite well. With the final releases of Miles Davis,not to mention the works of MC Solaar and Guru's Jazzmatazz series it was apparent that the present stage of electric jazz in particular would lay in hip-hop. Thus begun the sub genre of jazz-hop or hip-bop,which actually may have something to do with this record label. "URBANIZED" "Since, Miles Davis, after having seen him on the Tonight Show playing the Talking Violin, invited Urbaniak to play on his new album for Warner Bros. The violinist has performed a series of concerts with band Constellation, which includes drummer Lenny White, bassist Marcus Miller and keyboardist Bernard Wright - with special guest appearances by George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Tools Thielmans, Stix Hooper, Deodato, and the Brecker Bros. Currently, Urbaniak is touring and recording a oneman show-playing violin, sax, and keyboards. In the first week of June, "Violin Summit" will appear at the Blue Note in New York, featuring the collaboration of Urbaniak, and violinists John Blake and Didier Lockwood. "Be Bop....It was not so long ago that I was reviewing a Columbia re-release of Urbaniak's Fusion. That recording found the violinist very much in a Jimi Hendrix/Miles Davis electronic mood (appropriate for the early '70s). While a landmark recording, Fusion did not age well. Uhm, what a difference 20 years makes because Urbaniak did age well. Urbaniak has grown all the way up and has chosen retrospection on the present disc. How fortunate. The Evidence. The music is beautifully arranged and performed. It is also transformed. It is very difficult not to think of Le Hot Club du France when listening to this disc with its hot Bebop and lilting ballads. In fact, I think it would be a safe comparison to say that today Michal Urbaniak is to Stephane Grappelli as Bireli Lagrene is to Django Rhinhardt (would that not be a dream pairing?). Ask Me Now is a hearty and novel look at modern jazz by accomplished and experienced masters. A super release from Michal Urbaniak"

“ 2003-05-20 Randy Bernsen is an accomplished composer, arranger, and guitar player. The lad has a great future, judging by the impact of this album. Good blend of horns technology and feeling. And a stellar cast to boot. Jaco does his bass thing on the very vibrant funky "Old Hats" while Herbie Hancock and Urzsula Dudziak join him on "Windsong", building a mean latin groove full of triplets and trade-offs between Herbie's piano, Bernsen's guitar, Michel Urbaniak's violin, and * Mustafa's trumpet. Whew! A witty arrangement of ""My Funny Valentine"" * smoothly into "I Shot the Sheriff". Steppin' is a funk workout matching Bernsen's guitar with Peter Erskine's powerful drumming.
