Bio

Metermaids are two Brooklyn MC's, Swell and Sentence. Their 2008 debut "Nightlife," released on 27Sound, was named an "Essential Hip Hop Pick" by CMJ Magazine and garnered rave reviews from magazines like YRB and URB, as well as countless online music publications.

In December of 2008 Metermaids released a free mash-up of their album with Sufjan Stevens' classic "Illinoise," which was an instant internet sensation. The mash-up received write-ups in major online and print publications like Spin, Wired, The Village Voice, and Playboy, and was being downloaded around a thousand times per week.

Metermaids also has one of the best live shows in hip hop today.

About

Metermaids' new album "Nightlife," released on 27 Sound, is like a raucous Saturday night out in New York City---It's the live energy of the Beastie Boys, the anthemic rock of U2, and the funk and soul sounds of Motown, brought all together to create a brand new sound in hip hop music.

"Nightlife," named an "Essential Hip Hop Pick" by CMJ New Music Monthly, hit #9 on the CMJ Hip Hop Charts and stayed in the Top Twenty for two straight months, rubbing shoulders with the best in hip hop -- artists like Atmosphere, The Roots, and The Cool Kids.  The album has also garnered gushing reviews from Urb, YRB Magazine, and various blogs across the internet.

Epitaph recording artist Sage Francis thought enough of the album to sell it through his Strange Famous Records, making Metermaids' song "Turn it Up," featuring Camp Lo, "Clip of the Week" on the store's webpage in July.

The manic energy of the Metermaids' live show has built them a serious buzz, and they have capitalized on that by touring near-constantly in the past two years, including showcases at the last two SXSW and NXNE Conferences, as well as a CMJ showcases in October '07 and '08.  They also regularly open for some of music's biggest names -- acts like Brand Nubian, The LOX, Fabulous, Sage Francis, Lyrics Born, and Umphrey's McGee, to name a few.  The broad range of acts they have opened for is a testament to not only the quality of the Metermaids' live show, but also to the broad appeal of their music -- Metermaids are equally at home in front of a rock and roll audience as they are in front of a hardcore hip-hop audience.

With "Nightlife" making serious waves with critics, DJ's, and audiences across the country, 2008 seems to be the year of the Metermaids.  Get ready.
