Bio

Emerging from the world of Reggae music, comes a new sound into the mainstream culture of Hip-Hop blended with Pop infusions. Meru Matu's consistent originality is proving strong as she steps from her best known realm of music into a new skin of sound.

Never fearing change Meru puts her vast musical diversity to good use and aims to expand her audience to be a cross culturally inclusive brand of music that is inviting to everyone. Always walking a fine line and always outside the boarders of the stagnate box of the norm, Meru creates a refreshing expression of truth that is sure to make you want to rewind and play again and again. Sweet? Yes! Average? NEVER!

About

Realizing endless layers to the human experience exists, Meru is always searching for new layers of expression to discover, interpret and translate into audible sound that anyone, no matter, age, race, religion or sex will feel musically welcomed by. "I am only satisfied when I am moving forward... to much time standing still makes me a bit crazy". Due to the need for self evolution through self awareness, Meru has become a almost strange blend of human. She is a powerful singer, truth speaker, lyrical architect, eloquent flowatress, ex-graffiti artist, self promoter, producer, engineer, freestyle dance expressionist, model and love explorer of the heavens and earth. Though she is extremely intelligent she stays grounded in her humble wisdom that she plans to share threw her magical sound. Committed to truth and the continual search for more, Meru vows to never go against herself and create meaningless babel.

When Meru looks back on her life, all she sees is music. Born to create, Meru has never stopped progressing in her musical journey. Born and raised in the beauty of Californias Central Coast, her beginning was definitely outside of the ordinary. No city skylines or concert walls blocking her in, no busy streets and loud music, no b-ball courts and gangs... For Meru, it was the quite simple life of a small town, no stop lights, just quite, country living that now days makes Meru quite an anomaly. "Funny how peaceful streets can feel like a prison, : say's Meru "and just like a prison, one uses their mind to travel and exscape. I always knew I had to get out and be more, so I did the opposite  of what I saw around me and in the end, I feel I was born to create Meru.

Turning out nothing like her environment would have expectedly of produced, Meru has always and is still creating her own path. Raising animals for the purpose of slaughter and then becoming Vegan, starting off shy to become a performer, living in a small country town to moving to Las Vegas, Seattle, South Africa and now Miami. A polarized opposite of only herself she continues to surprise everyone who takes the time to ask her where she comes from and where she is going.

Growing up in the quite hometown setting, provoked Meru to be bold and expressive, influenced by a huge blend of music, including Sade, UB40, Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael  Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Pink, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jr. Ried, Sister Nancy, The Wu-Tang Clan, Mos Def, Talib Kwali, The Roots and many others, Meru was inspired to follow on a musical journey. Writing lyrics since the age of 7 and singing since she could speak, she has been inspired to create a blend of her influences. "Confinement to one brand of music is like ownership in a way, I dont see any one genre as better then the other, I can sing, rap, chant, write anything I like; so why would I not allow myself to express what is truly inside of me?" Learning the recoding engineering and music business trade while attending college in Seattle Washington, Meru has become self sufficient in her musical game, but desires a team of people who sees her vision, believes in it and wants to be a part of it.

Meru's success has been international with such releases as "Bless Up Jah Rights" featuring South African Reggae artist "Black Dillinger" and "Burn Babylon", both from her debut EP "Between Two Worlds" and ranking on the top 10 charts on South Africas Channel 0 radio; broadcasting to the whole of South Africa. While living and recording in South Africa Meru toured from Cape Town to Johannesburg, learning how to stand her ground in the face of opposition and being rewarded with loving acceptance. "I moved to South Africa after a harsh realization of the life I was living. I was living in Las Vegas, working in the high life of the 5 star Casino Spa's working on far to wealthy people, hearing all their stories of how money really isnt the cure to life's problems, my relationship of six years was going no where and I needed to rebalance my perspective on the world. I needed to humble and strip myself of the standard America way, remember how to be grateful and love myself outside of a relationship. I also needed to free up myself in order to truly express myself creatively and find my voice." Radio interviews, live performances and daily interactions with townships peoples quickly became Meru's life as music and South African fame came fast.

Back living in the United States Meru hit another top radio position, but this time it was number 4 in Italy with "Truth, Order and Unity" from the sell off compilation album, "The World Go Round Riddim"; featured as the only female amongst reggae royalty such as, Sizzla, Pressure, Turbulence, Delly Ranks and more, Meru held her own and proved she is ready for the big leagues of music. "I love this song "Truth, Order and Unity", it is the translation of  Matu and it is my truth.  The production is a collaboration between "Itation Records" of California and the "TUNEIN Crew of France," love the riddim!"

Sponsored by Jamaican clothing line Cooyah and now CY, Meru went to work on a album called "Reggaelution". "Reggaelution" was meant to tie up lose ends and bridge gaps in cultural communications", says Meru. "I studied deep and realized that I have to go beyond myself and what I know to reinvent a sound that allows everyone to feel excepted and invited. Music is for everyone and reggae became a bit one sided for me and as well I became a bit to broad for the listeners. I personally agree with freedom of self and do not support the oppression of any people, wether it is for their skin color, sex, religion or sexual prefernece. Reggae has gone to far with the "bawty bwoy" ridicule and I dont see myself in a realm without love for all.No love is lost, It is simply time to move on and continue doing what I do, which is making music and staying true to myself. Now its back to the drawing board, but I look forward to this new chapter in my life."

In May of 09, Meru completed her final US reggae tour, opening up for reggae legend, "Everton Blender" backed by the Boston based "Dis-N-Dat Band", also on the tour was "Ras Indio, Zema, King-I and DJ Thomas of One Sound" in 4 states. Meru has also opened up for Dancehall King Delly Ranx along side Sarai Knowledge and performed on many festival stages throughout the US.

Presently in the studio, Meru is being Meru. Stay tuned for her emersion into the mainstream sound clash. "I will stay in touch with my reggae roots, I will just open a closed door and let the fresh sounds of hip hop and pop flow threw to bring the fullness."
