“Always the bridesmaid, hard rock band Mayqueen has tasted second prize twice in as many years. But that doesn't faze the five musicians Jack Cunnigham, Jasper Morris, Trevor Grifin, ALex Upton and Aiden Jones one bit. The local boys fell just short of the top win at the Local and Live competition at the Gaslight Tavern last month, but Cunningham says the band actually prefers the second prize - a two track recording deal. This years award together with last years second prize in the competition enables the band to record a four-track EP which they hope will be released by the end of the year. Guitarist Cunningham never considered the result with 32 bands competing in the annual event. "We thought we'd be third or fourth, not second," he says. Not only that, Jones, of Mclaren Flat, was awarded best bass player in the entire competition, walking away with a $500 gift voucher. "He was very stoked with that," Cunningham, of Glenelg South says.”
