Matt grew up in Akron, Ohio and started playing the trumpet in 8th grade, and was immediately drawn to Jazz music. After playing in various concert, marching, and Jazz bands he was chosen for the all Ohio concert band in high school. Matt also received Special Recognition for his trumpet solo during the Akron Jazz Festival in 1996, and was chosen to play in the University of Akron's high school Honor band during his senior year in high school. During college Matt joined the Ohio Army National Guard and was chosen to play taps and other military tributes for his unit, the 1/107th Armor based in Stow, Ohio. He was also chosen to play at the University of Akron's military ball for the R.O.T.C. program.

In college Matt completed his Bachelors of Science, and Masters of Higher Educational Administation in 2005. Matt is married to Mary and has a two year old girl named Madison.
