About
Matt Jasper is a singer songwriter who has an ear for a hook, a lyrical wit, and a charming stage presence. He was born and raised in New York, developing his musical chops on a number of instruments. He took up trombone in elementary school, and the guitar and bass in high school. He began making music at from an early age, and hasn't stopped since.
In the Fall of 2000, he begin college. Using a four track recorder, he created his first album, aptly titled, "Jasper Makes Music". After settling into college life, he formed his first band, Red Electric and released his second solo record, "Thinking Back" (2002). The members of Red Electric also formed the Rutgers University Musicians' Guild, to promote musicians rights on campus, which Matt Jasper led for over a year. After Red Electric broke up, Matt added a backing band to his solo acoustic sound. Matt Jasper also become a disc jockey for the college radio station towards the end of college.
Through a portion of college, he had a long distance relationship which was documented in 2004's "The Distance Between". This album marked a step up in production, with a full band sound being overdubbed, developing a thicker pop sheen compared to his earlier stripped down sound. Through this process he also developed his prose writing, and wrote a series of prose short stories interwoven through the song cycle.
After college was completed, the relationship that inspired The Distance Between came to an end. Matt began a column through the local music monthly Aural Fix, called Scenes From The Scene. He also became active and involved in his local music commnuity, serving on the board for the Long Island Acoustic Movement, and working with Richard L'Hommedeiu of the Long Island Music Hall Of Fame. L'Hommedeiu co-produced his latest effort, As A Matter Of Fact, which was released in the Spring of 2007. As A Matter Of Fact was released as the first album on the For The Records insignia, an independent label which Matt Jasper owns and operates.
Now living in New York City, Matt is currently hard at work establishing his music publishing company, What's The Matter Music Publishing, recording a series of follow up EPs to As A Matter Of Fact, and balancing all that with a day job within the music industry in Manhattan. In addition to that, he continues in his pursuit to foster an active pursuit in furthering musician's rights and education.
