Tuesday 21st December MIKE BRIGHTLEY + REMFRY DEDMAN + TOM CRAVEN + HANNAH HARRIS + a late set from MARK MULHOLLAND £6 Mike Brightley - guitarist/singer/songwriter - performs with a versatility that takes him from sweet, chilled-out melodies to darker, heavier sounds, drawing comparisons to Neil Young, Damien Rice and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The emotional intensity displayed in his vocal delivery combines with talented guitar playing to make his dream-like sound a very compelling listen. Cathartic, contemplative, questioning lyrics link love, loss and philosophy, making his songs sound simultaneously melancholic and hopeful. Mike's major musical influences include John Frusciante, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Josh Homme, Pearl Jam and Jimi Hendrix. He has been performing live for almost 15 years, with bands or as a solo act, across the UK and from Scandinavia to South America. Paranoid and beautiful. Soothing and searching. Well-crafted rock music straight from the soul. Mike Brightley's single "Say It" was released last November. "Say It" is an apocalyptic love song loaded with strings, guitars and tenderness. Also on the release are gig favourite "Call To Arms" and lullaby "A Better View". The tracks were produced by Nick Harris, mastered by Grammy-nominee Andy Jackson. www.myspace.com/mikebrightley The idea of writing and performing such intimate songs before an audience of mostly strangers, with just a microphone and a guitar is not what Remfry Dedman had in mind for a career. "I always wanted to be in a band, playing much louder and screaming instead of singing.Unfortunately I was always with the right people at the wrong time.or the wrong people at the wrong time." During a very drunken New Year's jamming session with some old friends (the majority of which is now just a hazy memory), Remfry had an epiphany. Deciding to take matters into his own hands, he decided that he would try writing a few songs on his own, perform them for friends and see how they went down. "It seemed the most Punk Rock thing I could do. If I can't find a group of guys to play music with, then fuck it, I'll just do it by myself." The initial shows weren't promising.but gradually, with more practice, craft and whiskey, Remfry was able to build up a repertoire of songs which not only did he like but his friends and strangers seemed to like too. Applying his love of rock, metal and hardcore to a more gentle acoustic style is easy. "I approach folk songs the same way I would approach a big rock song, you just have to replace the power chords on an electric guitar with more open chords on an acoustic guitar. Apart from that, the two styles are practically identical." In February 2009, Remfry entered Spare Room Recording Studios to record his debut EP, "I Tell My Guitar the Things I Used to Tell You." He spent 6 months meticulously crafting and honing 5 songs and trying to carve out a big sound using multi-tracked vocals, several guitars, piano, strings and even some marimba. "In the studio, I didn't even want to think about playing the songs live, I just wanted to add as much to the songs as possible to give them a rich, timeless quality. The arrangements sound big considering there's only one person playing most of the time." Consequently, in a live setting, Remfry uses the basic song and improvises around the structure to create a unique show every time. "I know I have to get from point A to point B, but I could choose any number of ways to get there.I just let the mood take me and see what happens." www.myspace.com/remfrydedman Tom Craven is a 22 year old singer/songwriter and performer from Watford who aims to bring thoughtful and emotive, yet punchy and catchy tunes to whoever cares to listen. With 10 years of performing experience under his belt, he has been gigging throughout London, the Midlands and further afield trying to spread the word of his music. Since only being the acoustic performer we see today for the past 3 years, he has built up a reputation for a consistent set of powerful epic ballads about love and loss and contrasting, upbeat melodies sometimes compared to and reminiscent of Goo Goo Dolls, Feeder and Tom McRae. With that in mind, Tom has set about forming the new band The Chapter to give his most accessible songs of his set the lease of life they need. It's about time the incredible amount of new material emerged and gets recorded, either alongside the band or solo. Recently he's finally released his debut CD "Unseen Angel", which is on sale now! Expect a hell of a lot over the next few months. It's all go. www.myspace.com/tomcraven After getting knocked down by a truck in April last year and getting back up again Hannah Harris is now ready for anything and chomping at the bit. Time out in 2009 has led to lots of new songs and a new sound, not to mention the psychedelic paintings...mmm pain killers. www.myspace.com/hannahharris For many years, Scottish singer-songwriter Mark Mulholland has been constantly playing and touring throughout Europe and North America, both solo and with various bands including acoustic folk/roots outfit Two Dollar Bash, with whom he has recorded 3 albums. Mark's solo CD "The Devil on the Stairs", a double album including a live recording of a gig at the 12 Bar, has been released by UK label Troubadour to critical acclaim, and he is now putting the finishing touches to the follow-up album. He is also active as a session player, who has recorded with Nikki Sudden, Captain Sensible, Phil Shoenfelt and many others. A versatile and accomplished musician and singer, his songs have been covered by numerous artists in Europe and America.. "An inventive, melodic guitarist with a warm and expressive singing voice; flashes of Jansch, Perrett, and Dylan; conjuring long languid afternoons and melancholy drawn-out nights in distant cities." Nick West, Rock'n'Reel "Hypnotic and forlorn tales of heartbreak and longing. With a voice fraught with experience but weathered with the warmth of a certain wisdom, this is a great late-night reflective collection, incandescently candlelit and replete with swirling psych tinges of the early Roy Harper, Robert Wyatt and the desultory poetry of Townes Van Zandt."
