“Marcus Adams is a late-blooming smooth jazz saxophonist who proves on his debut CD that some things are worth the wait. Adams mixes moods throughout the CD with buoyant sax harmonies and in-the-groove clap tracks that are simply irresistible. The music has an upbeat quality that should fit perfectly in smooth-jazz radio. “Testify” and “Moscato Nights” are smoldering ballads with breathy and sexy background vocals and show that Adams’ R&B roots are well grounded. “From the Heart” is a gospel- and blues-soaked ballad on par with some of Whalum’s memorable slow burns. Adams throws in plenty of well-timed alto sax bursts and these, mixed with longer-held notes, are the kind that gets people off their feet and clapping at shows. Adams concludes the six-song EP with “Trip to the Moon”, the song that most exemplifies his jazz sensibilities. Thumb-popping bass lines and thoughtful piano passages help give the song its grace.”
