DIEGO PAQUÉ
FLAMENCO SINGER-SONGWRITER
BIOGRAPHY
Who is Diego Paqué
Diego is the son of Maria el Merguizo, and like her, was brought up singing at local bars from a young age. He learned to talk by listening and repeating the traditional verses of songs sung and performed by the regulars at their family's bar.
He was born in Bilbao, but it was at this bar on a road through the town of Despeñaperros and a rural Andalucian cottage where he lived his first years. Time moves slowly for a child living in the countryside, so he entertained himself with a guitar.
His mother, after seeing his interest in the guitar, realized that he needed direction and decided to send him to Tomás, a wise old guitar professor in the next town over. It was there that he learned the mystery of the 6 stringed instrument.
After living in Alicante and Madrid, and with little more than his guitar, he arrived to a small apartment on Las Ramblas in Barcelona at the age of 24. He brought with him his experiences from around Spain, using them as musical tools to build himself a home in the Catalan capital.
A rich, challenging and ever changing life has created many interesting situations and emotions that are evident in his compositions for their mixture of cultures, ideas and their promotion of tolerance. His songs reflect travels and experience that are never linear: some display a sensitive moment while others show times of impulsive and intense emotions.
He utilizes his vocal range and original voice, based in his flamenco roots, to sing a variety of musical styles, offering a memorable live act where he sings, shouts, whispers and improvises together with his musicians and the crowd.
Along the road...
Diego Paqué recorded his first demo, Calle Clara, in a home-studio, El Tigre in Heredades, Alicante in 2000.
This was followed by another demo, Sin Derecho, recorded at Cactus Studio in Copons, Barcelona one year later.
A third demo, Estoy en Casa, was recorded at the home-studio Pámies in Odena, Barcelona.
In 2003, he completed his first LP: Merguizo. It was recorded at Vivasound Studios with the label Musiclab from Espluges del Llobregat, Barcelona.
Merguizo was nominated in the category of Best New Artist and Best New Album in the 2004, National Music Awards.
In 2005, he released his second LP, Un Botón de Cada Color. He has performed the songs form this album in numerous festivals and clubs in various countries, including his 2006 Summer Tour of Cuba and Venezuela.
For his agility and high level of creativity, various directors and producers in the film industry have also requested that he compose soundtracks and participate in roles as in actor in films shorts.
Diego Paqué Today
Diego Paqué is a singer/songwriter that combines pop, rumba, and flamenco with his own style. He brings to each performance what he would call, “Rumba Rock”, “Cádiz Funk”, “Fandangos Campesinos” and “Flamenco Blues”.
Currently he combines his musical activities and performing with teaching flamenco guitar and cajón. He uses his artistic expression to show young people that through consistence and hard work dreams can become reality.
An artist in constant evolution, day by day he grows and shows his strength and vitality in his live concerts accompanied by exceptional professional musicians.
The newcomers to the group are “GORKA LASA” (San Sebastián) and “JEFFERSON ROSE” (Seattle). Gorka is an electric pianist who settled in Barcelona, after years playing music in the New York scene and in the Basque Country.
Jefferson is an American bass player who grew up in the rock & roll, blues, funk and world music scenes with groups such as Iguales, Moonshiner, Dinner, Hott Damm, The Soul Pistols, Kate Noson, and Big World Breaks.
These are great musicians who know how to contribute to his Flamenco style with a touch of fusion that the audience appreciates.
Diego Paqué, has one son.
