“Joey Slutman: The Hardcore Historian. « JUMP: The Philly Music Project Joe Annaruma, formerly known as Joey Slutman, watched the evolution of punk and the rise of hardcore from the center of the mosh pit, and also from the stage. He played shows alongside Minor Threat, sang in costume for GWAR and continues to perform with his current band, Man is Doomed.”

“Katrina Benefit Wed., Aug. 29, 8pm. $10. With Black Landlord, McRad + Man Is Doomed. North Star, 27th and Poplar This town has more benefits than a hot drunk ex. So what's so great about this one? First of all, it's a bona fide supergroup of hometown hip-hop and hardcore royalty starring Black Landlord, McRad and Man Is Doomed. Then there's M to the Double X co-conspirator, ex-pro skater and session legend Chuck Treece, who's resurrected McRad from the '80s skatecore boneyard for your punk rock pleasure. Treece also originally banged the skins for Man Is Doomed, a dark lyrical act. Pay attention to Doomed Man/benefit organizer Joe Annaruma, back in Philly by way of the Katrina evacuation. He honed his showmanship chops fronting Gwar as Joey Slutman. For serious. The whole bill is a madcap collective of Philly music heroes tossed together to signal that although radical chic is so, so over, radical beats ain't going nowhere.”

“Now Annaruma's in Philly playing noisy surf punk with guys he started his musical career with. Some he played with back in the day, like bassist Jon Graf (Judicial Fear) and guitarist Paul Billbrough (Throttle), both of whom ruled Philly's slop-rocking roost in the band She-Males during the '80s. Some Annaruma just palled around with, like Man Is Doomed drummers Mike Mosley and Chuck Treece (of McRad) Though Annaruma and Graf made their hardcore bones in Philly, they got their start in Norfolk, Va. "I started playing in 1980 on a $75 guitar I bought from a pawn shop there. Graf was with me, bought a $40 bass, started Judicial Fear and within months we were playing with Minor Threat and D.O.A."”
