“This was an evening about a sense of scale. Pawel Romanczuk 's five-piece Małe Instrumnety (Small Instruments) specialise in ensemble music for toy pianos, ukuleles and other Lilliputian devices. Though in this context their three bass ocarinas for an amazing Nino Rota piece looked, well, enormous. The group's heart seems to lie with soundtracks from the revered Polish animated film tradition, material that they play extremely well, reminding some listeners of John Zorn's reclamation of Carl Stalling's Looney Tunes scores. If they sometimes tip headlong into musical silliness, at least they take the audience with them, and the substantial crowd in Bush Hall gave them an enthusiastic welcome.”
