“Music production is not just my business; it’s my passion and purpose” says Michael “Major Keyz” Walker, a rising BMI producer.

Growing up from birth in a musical family, his father was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, keyboard player and composer and his mother always had a keen ear for music. With that foundation his household was an environment where all types of music could be heard. “I mean my musical influences were everyone from Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Prince, Soul II Soul, Expose, Fleet Wood Mac, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, Kenny G, Sade, Stevie Wonder etc. There was always music playing whether it was Jazz, Soul, R&B, Rock, Pop, or Hip Hop.” Music was the core of Major Keyz family. At the age of seven his father, a skilled musician, began giving him piano and music reading lessons. “This was very beneficial to my growth as a musician, but I still found I always heard more than what was on the sheets of music.”

Later on Major Keyz joined symphonic band and the honor choir, but even that wasn’t enough to crave his hunger for creating music. “I remember walking to school beat boxing, but in layers. I would beat box the drums, then the instruments, then the bass. I didn’t realize then that what I was doing was actually producing music in my head.” The talents came into the forefront while serving in the U.S. Air Force when the talented Chris Green, a producer from North Carolina, put him on to production and arranging. “He showed me the ropes and took me under his wing and I’m forever grateful.

As his skills and focus began to grow, Major Keyz realized his love for producing music could actually become a lucrative business so he moved back to Houston to perfect his craft. He began working on projects out of the World Class Sunrise Sound Studios, a studio which has recorded and engineered gold and platinum albums from Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Al Jarreau, Selena, Scarface, Lenny Kravitz and Yolanda Adams among others. “I got hands on and put a lot of hours in with the best equipment. I mean I had nights where I would stay for days and still be mixing trying to get stuff right.” This passion has lead Major Keyz to enroll in one of the only world class recording studio schools MediaTech Institute which doubles as Sunrise Sound Studios to become a certified sound engineer. With advanced training in sound engineering, using business lessons and marketing strategies taught from working as a President Obama Staffer, combined with his ever expanding musical talents the sky is truly not even the limit for Major Keyz.
