Magnificent Birds of Prey / Press

“In lieu of the amazing string of songs this EP delivers it almost feels as if Magnificent Birds of Prey are really on to something. The Magnificent Birds of Prey (EP) is a one of a kind musical statement that’s closely tied to classic punk rock, but has a more modern alt-rock sound. I hate to pigeonhole but I can hear Death Cab for Cutie, All American Rejects, Postal Service and The President of the United Sates of America. Magnificent Birds of Prey will please a wide range of musical personalities in the process. Sure it’s possible that future releases (Full Length CD) will demonstrate more musical molding or identity developing. Many bands start off sounding like another act in a descript way only to develop their trademark sound later. But when Magnificent Birds of Prey is finally over one walks away felling these guys are on to something special.”

“Philadelphia based 4 piece band Magnificent Birds of Prey (Carl, Jeff, Joel, Lyle) delivers a hot to the touch eclectic style EP borrowing from Alternative Rock, Punk Rock and retro Psychedelic Punk - all combined with a buzzed out indie-alt/rock aesthetic. Their lyrics share a reckelss self-depreciating sensibility. They write of the mundane and the complex, admits to what they don’t understand and questions what they already know. This latest self titled EP work was released in 2013 and consists of 8 compelling tracks. Track 1 “Anthem” sets the stage well for a consistent and jaw dropping musical journey. Expect soul-stirring harmonies and at times hypnotic rocked out psychedelic style instrumentation laced with rock solid vocal harmonies and interesting lyrical content. Straight away it’s clear to me these 8 tracks are an imaginative return to humour-laced song writing fused with the better musical touches of today Alternative Rock, all with the eccentricity of vintage punk.”

“Self Titled EP is an exciting and at time explosive album that gleefully moves up and down the spectrum of modern alt-rock thick with satire and guitar driven, high octane melodic landscaping. Opening with the brilliant track “Anthem” to the finger snapping “Definition” and rocked out “Wolves a Comin” through the lingering rocked out elements to the final piece “Spent” this album really hits on all cylinders. Magnificent Birds of Prey a/k/a MBOP is an eclectic mixture of all the best modern Alternative Pop Rock, eccentric Singer-Songwriter has to offer. The music herein is perfect for jamming out to, or playing in the car for a long drive.”

“A few tracks notably stand out for me in particular. “Wolves a Comin” and “Anthem” are 2 strong songs that deliver pure grooved magic and an impressive writers touch. While the movement presents a straight forward hooky guitar, quirky vocals that let it all hang out. Despite this somehow the music has a more of an organic feel as the CD hits solid stride. This is definitely a modern example of classic psychedelic-alternative rock popular in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. I can hear acts like Joseph Arthur, Beach House, MGMT, Eric Hutchinson, and even They Might Be Giants. This style of music is not easy to pigeonhole, however I suspect many of the previously mentioned bands have had an influence. The musicianship from all members (Carl, Jeff, Joel, Lyle) is how shall I say – off the chain.”

“CAUTION - you may get hit in the face. From the amazing "Anthem" opener to jumpy "Aviator Glasses" to more intense "Wolves a Comin'" to the more mellow and relaxing "Spent" virtually any music fan can find something they would enjoy in this mixture of songs. Magnificent Birds of Prey offers a unique opportunity to sit back and see where the journey takes you vi a interesting and entertaining sound that will remind you of Manchester Orchestra, Television, Tom Tom Club, LCD, Soundsystem, The Velvet Underground and Wire. Magnificent Birds of Prey is an artist worth watching live or checking out (live or in the Studio) as their rebellious sound and unique perspective on life can be appreciated by all fans of music young and old.”

“This band has only been together for a short time and are off to an excellent start. A full length album released, a retired champion of Gashouse’s Band vs Band and all before they played their first show. Not to mention they’ve held a spot in a spot in their Top 10 Countdown for 2 months straight. Magnificent Birds of Prey’s members are all very experienced musicians and it shows on their self-titled release. This album is completely DIY, as MBOP are accomplished on both sides of the recording console. Sample a few tracks on magnificentbirdsofprey.com, and pick the album up on iTunes.”

“An aviary of seasoned Philly rockers, this band's sound shows hints of alternative grunge, while being clearly unique and from 2013. This band makes their own studio tracks, videos, and everything in between. Their passion for their music is made known from the second they take the stage, and their live show always gets the crowd going.”

“Magnificent Birds of Prey won 15 days straight of our game Band vs Band. This is a very difficult challenge to accomplish. That means that everyday our listeners decided that they want to hear more from this band. It means that for 15 days straight, Magnificent Birds of Prey promoted their appearances, and got their fans to tune in, vote, and interact with the band in our chat room.”

“One thing that impressed me about this album/band is the attention to detail however, there’s a “college” ambience that really sucks in the listener into their musical world – very chaotic in scope. Almost like a party gone out of control. The instrumentation and tones give you that genuine feel of good Alt-rock music and writing from a generation ago, it has a solid feel reminiscent of music popular in the mid nineties. Magnificent Birds of Prey remind me of a modern day version of Superchunk but I can also hear Flaming Lips, Blur and Eels. All are solid musically and give off a youthful spirit. Magnificent Birds of Prey captures an energetic almost youthful spirit of indie-rock that will ring true not only for older more experienced listeners but new ones as well. This latest release from Magnificent Birds of Prey wraps up a well rounded and interesting cross section of classic Alternative Rock, and Psychedelic Indie-Punk.”

“Magnificent Birds of Prey is exceptional music and a multi-dimensional band to say in the least. The music itself is powerful, thought provoking, interesting and overly eccentric (in a good way). It also however possesses a hard Alternative Rock core breaking the traditional mold for that style of music.”

“This latest release Magnificent Birds of Prey is a strong and consistent musical statement from start to finish. Its strength –the strong song for song consistency, progressive dynamics and strong melodic structure that keeps coming at you. The music is catchy, melodic, and highly original. What else can I say? Magnificent Birds of Prey rock the “bird” house”
