“By Jeff Reid Developing from just something to do for fun, to something that has become much bigger is the story of Machine Gun, one of the best cover bands from the Wilmington area. Period. “Early on it was more about what we wanted to play,” explains John White. “But as time went on we took into consideration what people wanted to hear.” They dropped the tribute concept and began to cover songs of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Joined by Tommy Brothers, Tony Mallard and, Caryn Dunayer on keyboards, White admits that the secret of their success is not only their enthusiasm toward pleasing the audience night after night, but what each member brings to the band. “We are lucky to have so many people come to our shows and have a good time,” says White. “If it weren’t for our fans we would be just another garage band.” ”

I knew I needed a band that would play tunes people knew and could sing along with.I appreciated this because I was under a lot of pressure that night and to receive their assurances that they would be there when I needed them to be and play when I was ready for them was a life-saver for me. Finally, I gave them the nod to begin their set. The band dove into a spectacular set,playing tunes that engaged the crowd instantly. “Machine Gun at Downtown Sundown Concert Series 6:00PM - 10:00PM Machine Gun ("One of the best local cover bands" - Star News) The Downtown Sundown Concert Series is coordinated by Wilmington Downtown, Inc. to raise funds for our organization that will help us achieve our goals and accomplish our mission. The event features a variety of original and cover bands performing on Friday nights during the summer. Beer and wine, along with food, are available during the shows. The event is rain or shine. The event is held on Friday nights from 6pm-10pm. Dates are May 21st through September 3rd. “ The Variety Show is in a brand-new location this year, but it's the second year in its new incarnation as a music-heavy daytime event. In years past, before the event was scrapped and eventually revived last year at Legion Stadium, the Variety Show brought in such entertainers as the county comedienne Minnie Pearl and was topped off with fireworks. 5:20 p.m. MACHINE GUN: Arguably the top cover band in Wilmington, if not the entire state of North Carolina. Machine Gun is led is by the guitarist and singer Tommy Brothers, who does top-notch renditions of tunes by Jimi Hendrix (from whose epic, antiwar protest song the band derives its name) as well as classic '80s hits (like The Outfield's "Your Love") and cuts from the '90s ("Champagne Supernova" by Oasis). ”
