Bio
Mélodie en sous-sol was founded in 2007 as a fusion studio project by Italian and Moroccan musicians. The original concept consisted of creating a beat and/or a bass line for adding improvised accompaniment, melodies and words. Mélodie en sous-sol is chosen as the group's name because the studio was installed in the basement of a small house in south Morocco and their personal preference for the film Noir.
About
Mélodie en sous-sol was founded in 2007 as a fusion studio project by Italian and Moroccan musicians. The original concept consisted of creating a beat and/or a bass line for adding improvised accompaniment, melodies and words. Mélodie en sous-sol is chosen as the group's name because the studio was installed in the basement of a small house in south Morocco and their personal preference for the film Noir.
From 2007 to 2008 they produced six trilogys, each with an individual style and mood. The main instruments were a classical guitar, traditional percussions, hammond organ as well as sampled violins and a Fender Stratocaster, all mixed with FM synths and orchestration.
Originally intended as a fusion group, the trend moved from the beginning to ambient and downtempo with slight influences from spanish flamenco and traditional moroccan music. The result was an appropriate mix of a traditional and the modern as well as the western and the african world.
Today, the members of Mélodie en sous-sol exchange MIDI programmed rhythms and ideas for melodies and chords, but the original concept has been replaced by more individual forms of composing. Most of all Jamal Louatani (percussion, classic guitar) and Patrick Mattarelli (electric / classic guitar, programming) are still in contact and develop new ideas and songs.
They're currently building their own recording studio that will allow them to experiment more freely with sounds and instruments. They are thinking about deviating from sampled sounds to more original recordings and giving more importance to traditional structures and rhythms, as is Flamenco Compàses like Tangos and Rumba and Western African rhythms like the Ahwash.
