It was just like standing in a chimney
Too many bonfires turned the old walls black
How I loved that old Round Island Lighthouse
And thinking of it always takes me back

Chorus:
Back to excursions on a twelve-foot yacht
Passengers would board and off we’d go
A fifteen year old skipper and an able-bodied crew
Destination: Gulf of Mexico

We would sail into the island harbor
Just as if the dock and pier still stood
The old stone wall still made a good breakwater
Teaching us some things are here for good

The lighthouse keeper’s home was just a memory
Except for stilts that had held it off the ground
And bricks around the place he’d had a garden
That saved him buying produce back in town

Chorus:
Back to excursions on a twelve-foot yacht
Passengers would board and off we’d go
A fifteen year old skipper and an able-bodied crew
Destination: Gulf of Mexico

By the time I discovered that old lighthouse
Ships were using beacons out at sea
Even shrimp boats were equipped with RADAR
But that old lighthouse fascinated me

Now sometimes when I need some direction
When life and love have seemed to steer me wrong
I go back to that old Round Island Lighthouse
In my mind; it always takes me home

Chorus:
Back to excursions on a twelve-foot yacht
Passengers would board and off we’d go
A fifteen year old skipper and an able-bodied crew
Destination: Gulf of Mexico
