About

PLEASE NOTE: The first four songs in the music player above are from a live recording made for a podcast to be available this Spring (2008) from Chicago Acoustic Underground. The recording session/interview took place on the evening of March 5, 2008. THIO is grateful to Michael Teach and Michael Narvaez of CAU for making these recordings available to us prior to the release of the actual podcast. The last two songs are from Jeff Churchwell's debut CD, "Clandestiny," and are part of The Hawk In October's live set.

Left Turn At Albuquerque has undergone a major personnel transition. The current lineup is as follows:

Jeff Churchwell has played solo, in an early duo called "Westerly," and in a 4-piece folk/rock band called "Melanie's Waiting," all in Chicago. Jeff is the songwriter and lead singer for "The Hawk...", and counts himself lucky to be playing with such talented musicians. Jeff is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he played no music at all for eighteen years. Coming to Chicago at the turn of the Millennium got him jump-started in a big way.

Sarah Scanlon is an excellent vocalist for a start, but also a gifted instrumentalist (piano, hammered dulcimer, oboe, english horn), and a tremendously talented songwriter. But that's just the music side of her. She is also an actor and an aerialist (trapeze). She has actually played oboe while in the air, but we will probably not ask that of her in one of our shows. Then again...

Chris Hopper is a truly gifted musician, equally at home on a variety of guitars and basses. Chris will be focusing primarily on acoustic and electric guitars for The Hawk In October.

Kat Fitzgerald is a multi-talented drummer and percussionist, as well as excellent photographer (look for really great photos of the band [FINALLY] in the not-too-distant future). Kat also hosts the Uncommon Ground Open Mics and 4 Women Only series in Chicago.

Joe Nemec is a bassist who loves to dabble in lots of genres, and who brings out things in Jeff's writing and arrangements that Jeff didn't even know were possible. Joe and Jeff were previously members of the Chicago-based folk/rock band "Melanie's Waiting."
