““Sick Of It All”, the title track from Leaving Venus’s most recent EP made me smile right from the get go. You know the moment in the movies when a fledgling band in the late 1950′s excitedly listens to their song on the radio for the first time… and then it quickly cuts mid-stream to them playing it live? Well yeah, that’s the exact vibe you get at the 30 second mark. And the style of music in this track fits the image as well… a rockabilly styled tune, simple chord changes, but catchy and lyrically clever. Then right at the 1:20 mark you get a refreshing 10 second change in tone that brings to mind something you’d hear from The Connells, maybe like from the “All Sinks In” track off of One Simple Word. In fact it’s a glimpse of what the other tracks on the EP are like. I had a hard time choosing which other track from the EP to add to the broadcast. Ultimately I chose “Comfortably”, mostly because it had me tapping my foot halfway through my first listen.”
“Leaving Venus pour Funk, Soul, Blues and rock influences in the smelter and out emerges bars of gold. The trio are able to create a powerful sound-track, which simultaneously doesn’t have the need to blow out the ear-drum, as the muted material possesses a depth belying the fact there are only three musicians involved. Rolling thunder rumbles through the sound as the guitar weaves, yet, they retain sufficient control to ensure it doesn’t all just spill over in to some hazy self-extravagance. Not to be out-done the drum-kit is given the occasional run-out, but once again this is delivered within the context of the over-all song structure. Leaving Venus has much to offer a breadth of music fans, as the material doesn’t attempt to cram itself in to one specific mutation, rather, the trio are capable of moving away from the core sound and still deliver something which demands consideration.”
“Leaving Venus ‘Sick of it All’ EP Review The six guitar driven tracks that make up ‘Sick of it All’ include elements of power pop. Indie rock, funk and alt. country. That assortment of styles is one of the strong points found on the EP that keeps you guessing what lies ahead.
