About
ILL Entertainment was established in January of 1999 to bridge the increasing gap between HIP-HOP MUSIC and the MUSIC INDUSTRY and to change the MUSIC-MAKING BUSINESS back towards the BUSINESS OF MAKING MUSIC.
The philosophy of ILL Entertainment is best described by a quote taken from a 2001 The Threat's PyInfamous (aka Inf): "The first three letters of ILL are always capitalized in ILL [Entertainment] or ILLuminati Records (previously the name of the recording division of ILL Entertainment) because each letter is one of the three pillars we stand for. I is for Instrumentals - the hot beats that are a tradition in the South, but we also come with different type sounds to keep the game on its toes. L is for Life - this is our life. It's our entire being. It's what we love. It's why we are in the game. The last L is for lyricism, which is what we pride ourselves in the most, spitting hot lyrics. The L for life is between Instrumentals and Lyricism is closely connected to both, and everything that happens to us in life affects our beats and rhymes."
In the past decade, the urban music industry has shifted toward southern artists and their ability to produce club records with catchy hooks. ILL Entertainment aims to take the South to the forefront of hip-hop by revitalizing the lyrical skill present at the genesis of hip-hop and combining it with the southern flavor the entire country has already embraced. Attacking the dull complacency and monotony head-on, the artists from the ILL Universal regime create everything from thought-provoking social commentary to street anthems that every hip-hop fan in every hood can appreciate.
