Kyle Elliott and Voodoo Soul / Press
“Kyle Elliott’s musical education followed a typical arc, but the songs he writes are anything but.”
“Track 1: “Kansas City Rock” – I have never been to Kansas City but if this is the type of music that is played there I need to visit right away. Incredible opening track to the album, laying the path which the listener is about to take with solid guitar melodies and organs cutting through the backing instruments.”
“Track 4: “I’m Going Down” – I had Pandora on a Blues Rock station just the other day and this track could easily have been in the rotation. Very B.B. King like and classic blues ¾ feel. Very impressive vocals matching the blues mood of the piano fills trading back and forth with the guitar. I would think this to be a great live song with the solos extended and tons of blues rock jamming within the band.”
“Track 5: “Brown Bottle Blues” – The idea behind this song and the title are great. Solid idea for a track. The instrumentation out shine the vocals on this track showing how talented the band is from the organ solo to another strong guitar lead driving the song forward.”
“Track 6: “Outta Sight” – I particularly like this track because of the tempo. Again, showcasing writing and talent of the entire band. This song is not a slower blues track rather a up tempo fast paced blues rock track.”
“Track 10: “Funky Soul” – Voodoo soul really rocked this track. I could not help but nod my head along to the song the entire track. The mixing of this track is also superb. Being a drummer myself I can appreciate the drum track with complements the other instruments and is not just a time keeper.”
“Right off the bat I am very impressed by the professionalism of the album casing and quality of the artwork. This gives the listener reassurance the listening experience will be at its highest. The album has 10 tracks showing the band can write many great songs to produce a full-length album. Part of the band name (Voodoo Soul) suggests the music will have some solid blues and soul riffs similar to George Thorogood. Stevie Ray Vaughan inspired writing shines through in a lot of the tracks. Excellent guitar rhythms and strong drum tracks throughout the entire album. Great southern rock feel with phenomenal guitar solos. Amazingly professional sound which, needs to be played on the radio for many many many people to hear. I was incredibly impressed by this band. I review a lot of bands and this band stands out well above many of the others.”
“The CD [Northern Sky] opens with a great funky Blues-Rock instrumental called "Kansas City Rock". A high energy track that definitely will get people's attention.”
“Without a doubt the best track on the whole set is the least Bluesy song in the bunch, the title track "Northern Sky". It features a Hendrix-like guitar riff coupled with a Trower-like chord progression and a superb vocal delivery... I feel this may be a pre-cursor for what is to come from Kyle Elliott the songwriter.”
“Wes Jeans and Kyle Elliott are two of the hardest working bluesmen you will find anywhere. And the hard work pays off as they both leave the audience wanting more night after night after night.”
“Since we are celebrating change and doing something different, check out Kyle Elliott and Voodoo Soul. They are a young, high energy Blues band that have been making some waves on the KC scene the last year or so.”
“The Future of the Blues in KC”
“Although he lets his guitar do much of the talking, when Elliott sings, his vocals are versatile, evoking a smooth rockabilly crooner one moment and the gritty, bad-to-the-bone sounds of George Thorogood the next.”
“If Kyle Elliott were building a house, the only tool he’d need is his axe.”
