About

Always in love. Korby Lenker's songs hover between the confessional and impressionistic, and his voice has been called "lilting and soulful...like lemonade on a hot summer day” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer).

A gifted songwriter and performer, Korby won last year's prestigious Merlefest Songwriting Contest and has shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Ray Lamontagne, Keith Urban, and Nickel Creek. Additionally, he has played tastemaker festivals Bumbershoot and Sasquatch and has toured the UK and Ireland.

His current record, “King of Hearts”, is a smart-pop pleaser marked with an unusual blend of unique country-flavoured songcraft and a go-anywhere rock ethos. MOJO magazine gave the effort 4 stars and influential radio station KEXP Seattle said “stunning!” Two songs from King of Hearts were put in rotation on XM’s “The Loft.”

Born to a mortician dad and a school marm in small-town southern Idaho, Korby grew up along the Snake River and in the shadow of the ramp where Evel Knievel jumped the canyon, almost. In high school, he fronted the alt.rock band, Clockwork Orange. They played Cure covers, some Love and Rockets, mostly at Mormon Stake dances. He graduated after a bit and made for the West Coast.

Somewhere after graduating from Western Washington University in 2001, he quit the city and spent a year or so in a little cabin and then later a studio apartment on the Ohio River, eating grilled cheese sandwiches and staying up late at bluegrass festivals.

With a Martin D-18 in hand, Korby attended a number of Appalachian mountain church services. One in particular, the snake-handling congregation of The Church of the Lord Jesus in Jolo, West Virginia, taped their services on the off chance someone is bitten. Now, someone has in their collection a video of Korby, shaking a tambourine and singing Nearer My God to Thee while old men pass around three-foot-long timber rattlesnakes.

During those years, Korby formed bluegrass band The Barbed Wire Cutters, which was hailed by SPIN Magazine as the "young riders of the bluegrass revolt." Although Korby has sure footing in bluegrass and acoustic pop, he is just as comfortable ripping through an electric guitar solo or programming beats on his new electro-pop inspired cover  of the Neil Young classic Heart of Gold.

This May, Korby headed to Ireland for his second 10-day Irish tour in the last six months. He has built a following in the U.K. and Ireland with airplay and performances on Bob Harris' BBC Radio 2 program, RTE 1 (Ireland's national radio), and a number of other BBC stations.
