INDIGO, A Blues Opera by Karma Mayet Johnson, Indigo recounts a multigenerational American story of human bondage and the use of the erotic as a site of resistance. In the Virginia of 1856, two enslaved women—Eliza and Bell— form an intensely passionate relationship. It is their desire to live freely together that precipitates their flight from slavery. In their quest they uncover much—details of their captors’ European pasts, survival skills of the Native peoples, and the perilous nature of human desire.
