More About The Artist
"Interesting voice, it's almost conversational. But then on the song 'The Unconquered', it goes all PJ Harvey on me."

On April 18, 2008, Julia released her second record, ‘Lucky Penny’ with
co-producers Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes) and Mike Hoffmann (EIEIO) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Featuring world-class musicians including drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Sting); drummer Ben Smith (Heart, Taj Mahal, Cyndi Lauper); bassist Andy Stoller (Tracy Chapman); and Jeff Fielder (Sera Cahoone), as well as additional production and engineering by Ted Stockwell and Billy Sherwood, the record was mastered by Joe Gastwirt, and is available for purchase at the store above, and through CDBaby.com, iTunes, Digstation and many more online retailers.
Julia Francis’ sound has been likened to contemporary acts such as Alanis Morissette, Natalie Merchant and Aimee Mann; and such classic performers as Tom Petty, Joni Mitchell and Buffy Sainte-Marie.
"Vocal delivery is spicy and tasty."
Obsession Collection
May, 2008
“The songs on Lucky Penny put you in a unique position to be saved by emotional complexity – and not just have spent pop music by the dollar. Melody and rhythm are catchy and expert. It is hard to combine these two attributes. We have the authentic combination on this new Julia Francis album.”
Dr. Martin Jack Rosenblum
Music History And Literature Professor at UWM
“All the great singers hold up the story and make you feel like it isn’t singing at all but rather sharing a secret with you. Julia does that in her sleep.” -Mike Hoffmann, Producer
"'Cookin' With Gas' is a funky song with a great chorus. Francis really shines here. Her album is just great." - Lunakafe.com, Sept 2008
“Julia had the style and grace to go into whatever musical house we were building at the moment. Miss Francis delivers! I know, I was there." -Victor DeLorenzor, Producer, Violent Femmes Founding Drummer
In 2005, Julia released her debut record of 11 original songs, ‘Five Challenges to Flight’, produced by Mell Dettmer and featuring Eyvind Kang, Jason Merculief, Don McGreevy, Milky Burgess, Bill Patton, Steve Moore, Hans Teuber and Trey Spruance.
Reactions to the often unconventional structure of her first album’s songs were positive, and her sound was described as ‘Flaming Lips meet Fiona Apple’.
