Q: Jon what setup are you using to compose with? Are you using any acoustic instruments? Do you improve everything or do you score it out before hand. Did you go to school for for film scoring? Awesome!
A: Hey Joe, I run out of a small (humble) studio with a Core i7 computer and use Sonar X2 as my preferred DAW. I use a guitar + piano and a lot of soft-synths/VST plugins. Some of my favs are Native instruments, Omnisphere, East West & Cakewalk. I tend to go with a central theme when composing and build from there (sometimes I wake up with a tune in my head - even if its just a few bars). I didn't go to music school - in fact when I started I had to be shown where Middle C was! All the best.
