Stockholm Obama Gala/Celebration Jan. 20th 2009 “Made It to the Mountain”
Last night I attended the Obama Gala at the prestigious Koncert House in Stockholm, where they hold the Nobel prize celebrations each year.
I sat next to my good friend and fellow yank, Jon Ben Berger and we watched as many of our comrades and friends participated in a stunning, heartfelt production in celebration of the new President.
However we were patiently awaiting and eagerly anticipating the final number, which Jon had written for Dr. Martin Luther King and dedicated to Obama continuing the dream. It was a long personal battle for Jon to try and get this great song he’d written to see the light of day and just a few weeks ago when I noticed the first add in the paper about the Stockholm Obama event, I immediately sent Jon a message to get in touch with our friend Cyndee Peters, who I saw was producing the event and staring along with Eric Bibb and many, many others. It was late in the process and the show looked like it was all set, but still worth a try…
As I sat there in the balcony next to Jon and as the house band kicked into the infectious groove of the song, Jon grabbed my arm. The stage steadily filled up with all the performers of the evening joining a huge choir and the words lit up on the over-head screen next to Obama's image; “Just throw your hands in the air and climb, climb, climb…”, Jon’s words. The packed house jumped to their feet as Cyndee Peters urged everyone in the room to sing along with this chorus from his song “Made It to the Mountain”.
From that moment this song became an anthem which gave everybody permission to sing, shout and dance their joy of this wondrous, amazing moment in history. With tears streaming down his face uttering “yes, yes, yes, thank you” in between singing along with his own words Jon Ben Berger was celebrating his own victory, a victory that means the most to this artist, using his music in a profound way to make a difference. Using music to frame what is the best in us all and to have it reverberate to the core of every soul.
I witnessed this emerge at that moment and felt proud beyond myself.
The audience continued to endlessly chant the words; “Just throw your hands in the air and climb, climb, climb…”. I too was completely swept in the moment and my feet barley touched the ground. I looked around me from face to face and could hardly believe the joy that was being expressed by all. Jon slumped in his seat in disbelief that this moment had come, then jumping to his feet again shouting YEAH! The artists danced off, emptying the stage and Cyndee thanked all, signaling the end of the show and the public danced towards the exits as the band played on.
An intense night to remember forever for so many reasons…
Thank you,
