Bio
The imaginative soul of classically trained Bass Vocalist Jonathan Blanchard, came into maturity while immersed in Memphis's divergent styles of music and art. Possessing a voice comparable in depth and richness to the great Paul Robeson, his uplifting song has held the enthusiasts of Popular, Classical, and Religious song in sway. In the spirit of the acient griot, he creates musi that allows his deep, soulfully rich voice to blend with his compelling dramatic instinct.
About
FREEDOM’S SOUL – THE NEW ALBUM: Easily one of today’s most dynamic and powerful musical works. Brought forth from the historical roots of Memphis, this culmination of musical genres takes that history, the lessons learned, the inspiration and originality and transcends all ideas of what music is today. Rich in rhythm and content, Freedom’s Soul takes you there, on every track. There is truth, pureness and clarity in the message and simple genius within the compositions. Inspired by the coded field songs of slaves, this body of work is undoubtedly the direct descendant of the Negro-Spirituals sang through endless agony and endless hope of better days. You will be certainly be moved one way or another by this fusion of Spirituals, Folk, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Blues, Gospel, Spoken Word and Hip Hop.
*Let Us Break Bread Together- Is the first single to be released from Freedom’s Soul. Blanchard brings a certain gentle new approach to an old standard. The contrasting background vocals are smooth and rich, reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”.
*I Want Jesus to Walk With Me- Shows Blanchard’s unadulterated willingness to flow in any genre. This sultry, Salsa driven track speaks to the trials of life, and evokes a spirit to dance. Also gracing this piece is Viosocalist Brooke Alford, improvising her way through powerful, fluid and passionate violin rifts.
*Loose Beast- Is the socio-political anthem of Freedom’s Soul. With lyrics that weigh heavy on the mind, and a “stone groove” saturated with injections of vintage EWF. This track is in your face, taking no prisoners.
*Tired of Waiting- Is musically, Freedom’s Soul’s most aggressive track by far, pulling the listener back through time, back to those hot, back breaking fields. With an accapella, chain gang approach, this track brings Freedom’s Soul full circle musically and lyrically. Leaning on the rhythmic call-and-response traditions of enslaved Afrikan people in the fields and ports of this nation, this track carries a haunting sensation of old and new chain of bondage that have to be broken
