Johnsmith Out of Town: blues/folkWhen: 11/03/12 @ 7:30pmCost: $18Call: 920-294-4279Web: www.thrasheroperahouse.comMore Information: Folk singer-songwriter, Johnsmith, set to perform in Green Lake For the past 20 years, Wisconsin based singer-songwriter, Johnsmith, has been sharing his music with audiences across the U.S. and abroad. Driving 50,000 miles to play over 150 dates each year, he has become a favorite at coffee houses, colleges and house concerts alike. Enjoy a wonderful and memorable evening of the music and storytelling by Johnsmith when he graces the stage of the historic Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake on Saturday, November 3, 2012 for a 7:30 p.m. performance. Johnsmith was born in Dewitt, Iowa, where he shared his small town mid-western life (and house) with his two parents and nine brothers and sisters. The experience of growing up in such a large family nurtured within him a keen awareness of the value of community and at the same time, the absolute necessity of solitude. "Everybody would go out to play sometimes and I would go sit in the rocking chair and just make up songs and sing them," said Johnsmith. What he didn't know then is that those days would be the beginning of a lifelong journey. In addition to being a past winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk award, Johnsmith has released six CDs to rave reviews from trade publications such as Dirty Linen, Performing Songwriter, and Sing Out! magazines. He also served as a staff songwriter for the WrenSong Music Group in Nashville. Johnsmith's sixth CD Gravity of Grace, co-produced with Tom Prasada-Rao, recorded in Dallas, TX, includes a cast of acoustic music’s finest players including Darrell Scott, Tim O'Brien, Tom Prasada-Rao, Jagoda, Radoslav Lorkorvic, Ray Bonneville, Jonathan Byrd, and Jimmy LaFave. The songs on Gravity of Grace find John once again stretching his songwriting wings. Expressing the harder edges of life and love, these songs span a broad spectrum of genres from folk to blues, from gospel to Celtic. Tickets for this special performance by Johnsmith are $18 and can be purchased at the Thrasher office Knowledge Emporium, Green Lake Bank (Green Lake); Pick ‘n Save & Ripon Drug (Ripon); Twister (Princeton) or by calling 920-294-4279. On-line ticket sales are also now available at www.thrasheroperahouse.com.
Johnsmith At a time when national fame, fortune and reputation are often awarded to performers of pedestrian and limited talents and abilities, it is wholly refreshing to encounter an artist whose work " often grossly under-recognised " possesses a genius that cannot be denied, ignored or overlooked. Johnsmith is one such artist; a gifted singer-songwriter, moving performer and roaming troubadour. Above all else, Johnsmith is a Bard. The role of the Bard in every society is to hold up a mirror to that society, to convey and reveal - through the mysterious alchemy of music and words and performance " the secret inner language of the heart - delivered with that ineffable feeling called "Soul". John possesses these gifts in abundance. His song-lyrics are finely shaped and powerfully moving (this writer was moved to tears on first hearing " and meeting - John in my home some years back, when he sang "Iris Blue"; an unforgettable moment for me!) and voiced with a spirit and soulfulness that is earned through the embracing of the joys and the pains of a life (both physical and spiritual) lived to the full. Each of John"s albums to date (especially his most recent, the truly superb and to my mind, his finest work, Gravity of Grace) seek to explore and develop his unique vision as a wordsmith and his undeniable talent as a musician. As always, John"s musical journey takes the listener in to the heart of what matters to him as an artist. As always, his songs deliver an honest and sensitive account of the way-moments of a keenly observed life-journey and his inner impulse to reflect upon and celebrate the mystery of that journey with fierce truth, great sensitivity and tenderness, and, above all, ( to quote the title song of his latest album) the "gravity of grace".
