Jody Watley's ingenious, stylish videos raised the standards for female artists around the globe. This venerable artist participated in Bob Geldof's historic "Do They Know It's Christmas" in addition to the first global HIV/AIDS Awareness projects, RED, HOT and BLUE, where she performed the Cole Porter jazz classic 'After You Who'. In America she's received nominations for the MTV VMAs, NAACP Image Awards and American Music Awards. Featured in Vogue, Italian Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Rolling Stone, and once named one of America's Most Beautiful People by People Magazine, Watley transferred her influence from the recording studio to magazines, billboards and other diverse media. She was the first black woman to appear on a Japanese fashion magazine cover, specifically Japan's most elite, Spur. Among other notable benchmarks, Watley has perfomed by special invitation at The White House, participated in Force of Natures Tsunami Relief in Malaysia alongside other superstar acts such as The Black Eyed Peas, Lauyrn Hill and Boyz to Men. Beyonce Knowles and Destiny's Child recorded one of Watley's compositions 'Sweet Sixteen' on their 'Writings on The Wall' full length. Jody Watley has also worked with Roy Ayers, 4Hero, Rahsaan Patterson, and George Michael.
Prior to her stellar solo career, Jody Watley was an original member of the renowned trio Shalamar, singing on hits such as 'A Night to Remember', 'The Second Time Around' and 'For The Lover in You', which was also covered by Babyface. The updated version included an appearance by Watley and LL Cool J.
Understanding the new paradigms in the music industry, Jody Watley released her 9th solo effort, 'The Makeover' in 2006, via her own imprint 'Avitone Recordings', (which she formed in 1995) in an exclusive with the Virgin Megastore Music Chain and debuted as their #1 seller over all major label releases. "The Makeover' also debuted at #3 on the iTunes Electronic Chart.
Notable singles include; 'Looking For a New Love', 'Don't You Want Me', and the groundbreaking R&B/Pop/Hip Hop collaboration with Eric B and Rakim on 'Friends'.
