JJGotox was founded in 1989 by three members of the University of Southwest Louisiana (USL) Student Government Association, Jay Rield (bass,) Jay Frisco (drums) and Lee A. Gautreaux (guitar, vocals.) The band was originally named Fantasia, but sensing potential copyright issues with Disney, decided on a name more reflective of the makeup of the band: a J for each of the Jay's and Gotrox for the Gautreaux (a common mispronunciation of Lee's Cajun surname.)
