In late 2008, O'Neill built an in-home recording studio. He began recording the vocals, piano, guitar and additional instruments for his first self-produced album of originals, Violet. Drums and violins were recorded at Studio 417 with the help of drummer Greg Schutte (Minneapolis Dub Ensemble, Jelloslave, Lorie Line) and violinist Michael Sutton (Minnesota Orchestra).
