Nancy is one of three local coordinators of the Pittsburgh Songwriters Network, a songwriting group sponsored by the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) whose main purpose is to help songwriters develop their songwriting skills. “In 2005 when I seriously started pursuing songwriting, I dug in and studied hit songs. After years of fronting jam bands and more recently as a member of country-rock band, Black Rock County (www.blackrockcounty.com), Nancy’s primary purpose became to make people move. All that life and energy came together in her solo debut album “Life Jacket” . More pop than Gretchen Wilson but more country than Shania Twain, Deckant isn’t afraid to let her deep country leanings or her pop/rock roots show. As a young girl, my first influence that I can remember was Mariah Carey. My favorite recording of her was her MTV Unplugged album. It was awesome! I could sing that over and over, and I could even hit the high notes at one time in my life! Haha! But since then, alot has happened. I never quit singing, but never actually persued it. Life got in the way. As a young single mom of 2 beautiful little girls, I took a moment during a giant transitional stage in my life to reflect on what really made me come alive. The answer was music. Singing, performing, creating: this was my passion. In order to be the best "me." I decided to shift from finding validation outside of myself, giving time and energy to things that don't align with my personal values, and lack of focus to re-prioritizing my life and taking full responsibility for it, giving time and energy to the things that make me come alive, and learning to be the best role model that I can be for my children and others. That means singing to me.
