The Music of Ellington, Strayhorn and more with the Greg Hopkins SexTet featuring: Arnie Krakowsky, Jeff Galindo, Greg Hopkins, Doug Johnson, John Lockwood, Joe Hunt at the Beehive, Boston: "Greg Hopkins brings the most happening bands to The Beehive. Hopkins is a prolific composer and big band arranger as well as an exciting improviser. This is a band of powerful and nimble veteran players. Expect a swinging night." Arguably two of the greatest American composers to ever live, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn created huge body of jazz that changed the world of music forever. Using the medium of the big band Duke and Billy crafted a myriad of memorable compositions, such as "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," "Take The A-Train," "Sophisticated Lady," "Lush Life," "In A Sentimental Mood," "Afro Bossa," "Come Sunday," "Raincheck," "Azure," "Warm Valley," "In A Mellow Tone," "Perdido," "Star Crossed Lovers," "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing," "Amad, Isfahan," and literally thousands of others. These legendary composers filled the world with tunes in a genre of their own, and of which Duke called "American Music." And equally notable, pianist and big band leader, Ellington continued to rock the stage despite the decline of big band popularity during his time. After devoting his life to groundbreaking music, Ellington won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 1966. To honor the timeless music of this epic composer, Greg Hopkins will take the Beehive stage from 8:00PM-12:00AM and fill the room with classic Ellington and Strayhorn classics and much more.
