I Remember

We both came up in the same neighborhood you could say we were best of friends.
In the innocence of youth we played, we didn’t see the differences.
Black or white didn’t matter…we ain’t know about the world.
‘cause everything is beautiful in the eyes of little girls.

I remember playing hide and seek
I remember roller skating in the street
Playing our records all night long
Thought we was Minnie Ripperton
And I remember how it used to be
Jumping double dutch out in the street.
Missing the bus and have to run
Counting the clouds that cross the sun
The story of our lives had just begun.

With each school year came the reality that the world could be unkind
Although we felt like sisters, others drew dividing lines
It hurt you when they taunted you..they couldn’t see your light inside
A note slipped in my locker..“you need to stay with your own kind”.

Why can’t they see what unites you and me when they look to define one another?
If they could see through our eyes then maybe they’d realize that friendship and love have no color.
