Bio

hi.
My mom was a quiet catholic with the best soup receipes, and my dad was a non-practicing Buddhist with high blood pressure. I went to a protestant private school, prayed to all the gods I could think of every night before bed, and rode my bike in circles all the time. I had a serious fever when I was two, where I heated up to 104 degrees and my lip boiled. The bubble stayed, you can still see it today. I was a class clown, cheated on finals and threw things at teachers. Children have amazing imaginations. Being by myself a lot, I spent a lot of time in my room listening to the radio. It’s where I started singing, played with imaginary friends, and occasionally got electrocuted.

now i make records, tour, and write music.
love it so.

About

Libra Armor - Barkentine

Inspired by a lonely childhood, time was spent singing & pretending. "I had so many cassettes and sang along to my casio 2-deck." Pretending became a long-term vocal study. "..watched the singer's every move, learned vibrato, and matched tones to vowel. After 7 years of observation-imitation, anyone would learn a lot. I just happened to be lonely & happy in my head."

After immigrating to San Francisco Bay Area in 1990, she continued full musical involvement through college with a degree in Music Education at San Diego State University, where she began the power-pop duo Jason and Jane (1999). Opening for acts such as Jason Mraz, Lisa Sanders, Emm Gryner, and Tom Brousseau. Her rich voice was heard, but when the duo suddenly split in 2003, she had not composed a single song to call her own.

"Self doubt is paralyzing. I always told myself I couldn't write. The split was difficult and left no social trust, silence led to interrogations from everyone - it was a yearlong nervous breakdown. But desperation forces action..." As she finally began composing, a side-project called Starline Theorie found her voice. With a sound comparable to Massive Attack and Radiohead, she co-wrote soaring melodies in three languages as well as improvisation into her female lead vocals, "making music with them has an indescribable synergy."

On Valentine's Day 2004, Lui officially launched her solo career, and has since captured the attention of San Diego music scene again. Within two years, she had shared stages with talents such as Kate Earl, Sylvie Lewis, Kyler England, Jay Nash, Eddie from Ohio, Lisa Sanders, Gabe Mann, Vienna Teng, Ernie Halter, and more.

By May 05, Lui released her full length debut, Teargirl. With tablas, harp, harmonium, toy piano, organ pedals, brass, strings; no programming, digital editing, nor pitch correcting. Produced by Lui and collegue, Aaron Bowen, it is a courageous display of her capable voice, imagination, and high-caliber musicianship.

Her 2nd record, Barkentine, was released Sept 07. Lui bravely stitches it together with an essence of vast space, nostalgia, and sea shanties. Described as "an often dark affair", this record lets the listener fill in the space, while her vocals remain naked and touchable from your speakers. Engineered on a 16-trk, Lui ends up playing 14 instruments in addition to writing string and choir arrangements.

In a short time, Lui has built a strong following in San Diego while touring the west coast, appearing in a series of venues – (SD:) Cane's, The Belly Up, Humphrey's Back Stage Lounge, Lestats, Twiggs, UC San Diego, San Diego State University, University of San Diego, (LA:) The Mint, Highland Grounds, Room 5, (SF:) The Canvas, Sacred Grounds, The Attic, and has also been invited to play at Folk Alliance (2007), San Diego Asian Film Festival, SD Indie Music Fest, Adams Ave Street Fair, Celebrating Women's History Month, Pacific Media Expo, and many more. Lui was recently endorsed by Sam Ash Music and Knucklehead Strings. "Freddie Goodtime"; was selected to be a part of the demo playlist in Sony's handheld gadget, Mylo; while "Firefly" was selected to be a part of the new Mylo edition in 2008. "Freddie" appears in 10mph's DVD edition, an indie documentary made in 2005.
