“ To Halifax musician Jack Malmstrom, it did mean a thing that we didn’t have enough swing. So he took matters, or at least a jet black clarinet, into his own hands and started up his own dance band. Jack’s Cats is a relatively new act on the local live jazz scene, but joins a healthy roster of bands like the Jubilee Swing Orchestra, Swingology and Gypsophilia, dedicated to the idea that the music is meant to make you move. To that end, Malmstrom brings his sextet to the classy environs of the Lord Nelson Hotel’s Regency Ballroom on Saturday for a night of stomping, swaying and, if all goes well, jitterbugging, to a mix of songs from the 1920s and ’30s and originals written in the classic style. Malmstrom’s story begins in childhood in 1960s Southern California, listening to his parents’ old big band records, and becoming intrigued by the Prohibition and Great Depression period that spawned them. He always wanted to emulate his unlikely childhood heroes—for a kid raised”
