Bio
Jack Glass is a 4 piece melodic heavy metal band from the West Coast of Scotland. We have a sound best described as independent of decade. The band's supported some top signed bands like Waysted, Rose Hill Drive, Zodiac Mindwarp & Panic Cell and played on Glasgows top venues like The Cathouse & King Tuts.
About
Jack Glass recently released a new 7 track EP called Green River. Originally we were going to release two separate singles, but we felt a 7 track EP is more cost effective. The other main reason is to show our fans the difference between our first 2007 release 'Lessons In Evilution' and our new 7 track EP 'Green River'. We personally felt that our first recordings did not show the band in it's best form, we tried to cut corners and get the recordings on the cheap, but this backfired and we got what we payed for. This time we did things properly with the help of Graeme Sutherland at Pleb Studios and the difference in sound quality is very evident and shows that nothing good in music comes cheap, especially from a production perspective. These songs were written over a year ago, some nearer 2yrs old, but we only recorded them this year. We felt we had to quickly get some decent songs together so we could raise our profile and get on the gig scene again, thus the recordings are probably at bit rushed in that respect. We certainly feel our newest songs, like Mr Grim, Holy Devil, Broken and the upcoming Faint Is The Flame are by far our best works to date.
The new recordings hopefully show a marked improvement in musicianship, production & song writing. We feel we've matured as a band since 2007 and this has been helped by the band being more settled and focused on the music. Our new drummer Gavin has been a great addition to the band and has firmly stamped his own style on our music and keeps getting better and better at every jam. To be fair we did rush him a bit in regards to the recordings because good recordings mean more publicity and more gigs, but he handled it so well. Like any new musician joining a band, it takes time to not only learn the songs, but to then develope them and put your own mark on them as well. Each time we jam we can hear the improvements Gavin brings to the songs, as he get's more comfortable with them.
We now have only one song left to learn called 'Broken' and that's the band up to speed with the songs we're going to keep for the set & future album. We're in no rush to do this though because we've already started writing a new song as a band for the first time since May 2008. The reason it's taken so long is the band took a break for a few months, when we got back together our old drummer decided not to continue with the band, so it took a while finding the right replacement, which fortunately we did.
When it comes to song writing, we don't really have any particular formula. Usually Mark (Bass) will have a couple of rough riffs to start the process off, we then all work together constructing the music & lyrics around a few riffs and add more to suit the song as required until we all agree the song is ready. Each of us compliments each other in stlye & ideas, so we have a good balance in music theory, ability & natural flair, that works well for us and because we like different bands, each band member brings his own unique style to the band. For example, Mark is a huge King Diamond fan and loves death/thrash metal genres & classical music and anything with a good groove to it, Gavin loves The Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains and the more grundgy bands as well as some indie, Andy likes Slash & Zakk Wylde, Arch Enemy, Whitesnake as well as loads of hard rock and glam rock bands and Daniel loves Symphony X plus thrash, stoner & prog rock genres as well as classical, so we have a good blend of tastes and inspirations. Daniel also writes all our lyrics now, as it used to be Mark., but we all felt Daniel's style of writing much better suits our sound, as he can write inspired lyrics from the heart, whereas Mark was a more fact based lyricist, which you can tell on songs like Green River (about the serial killer), The Italian Boy (about grave robbers in london). The band has a lot more to come, we're nowhere near our peak but we've got a great platform to build on and will write and play music as long as we can. We're just scratching the surface of this bands potential.
