There’s a lot to be said about the up and coming Rapper/Singer, MISS TEE. Born in Ontario raised in Quebec, Natasha ‘MISS TEE’ St. Martin, was a poet first and found rap when she decided to take her writing to the next level; one that would soon gain her respect and praise from strangers on the web, to other artists alike. This Canadian gal does not shy away from much of anything as far as lyrical content is concerned. From songs like her single, ‘Everyday’, (A Hip Hop remake of the well-known Sam Cooke’s ‘Summertime’), she sheds light on the ‘hard knock’ era of her life. Making reference to her father’s passing when she was nine years old, she ‘spits’ the line, “AIDS didn’t just kill him I swear it killed me, been carryin’ depression like an STD.” So what’s so different about this female MC’s ballsy personal story-telling next to any other rapper? Well lines like, “Dark challenges led me to the gold horizon” And her chorus, “Life is golden live it like, everyday is Summertime”, makes it clear that this woman is making a strong point. She states, “I find that many artists need to consider the cons that can come with sharing our personal experiences in our music. Yes, we can all relate to the downside of life’s happenings, but while we have the power to be heard as artists, we have to leave people with something that inspires them. You have to remember your listeners are always doing just that. Other than teachers, pastors, guidance councilors and camp animators, there’s got to be other outlets where kids, peers and even older generations can go to seek inspiration. Why NOT walk away from listening to a rapper’s album feeling like you just got your daily dose of positive energy? That’s what I feel after listening to a Common, The Roots and even a Kanye West album, so that’s my goal- to have that kind of effect on my listeners as well.” There’s no doubt that MISS TEE’s way of thinking is exactly what the Canadian music scene is in need of right now and no doubt, it’s refreshing to hear these powerful statements from a female MC with swagger as natural as her approach to anyone who looks like they could use a little uplifting. With all that said, don’t let the word, ‘Rapper’ fool you. MISS TEE also sings with a fierce tone that can easily have you feeling like you’re listening to a jazz singer, when she’s on her mellow vibes. Or even a pop princess when she really feels to make a club banger. Wondering where all that versatility comes from? Well, it’s no surprise that a girl growing up with a west Indian background in such a multi-cultural city like Montreal, would end up blooming into a well-rounded, open-minded lyricist wanting to reach EVERYONE to try and satisfy their need for good Canadian music. Oh- And don’t be alarmed if you hear this talented young woman in more than one music genre. Whatever MISS TEE dips her hand into is sure to get stuck in your head. It’s no wonder the list continues to grow with artists who’d love to get her on their hook, or who want to collaborate on projects. “I don’t discriminate against different types of music. Now days, almost everything is pretty much an extension of something that already exists. I’ll vibe on anything that speaks to me. Whether its Dance, Reggae, R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul or Underground, I don’t care- My message will always shine through. Besides, sticking to one genre of music is bad for business in this new aged era where people are easily bored with repetition. Look out for me!” And with that, she raises her hand to her head to salute and she’s off to conquer the music game. You go girl, you got our vote!
