About
Led by Richard Zilg and backed by a semi-revolving cast of musicians and friends, the band spins songs balanced delicately between folk and indie-rock, tradition and experimentation, craft and improvisation, sense and gibberish. They like what they do.
Zilg's songs, traditionally written and emotionally delivered, serve as the material – instrumentation and arrangement varies from song to song, from stage to recording, and sometimes from one day to the next depending on the mood of the band and phase of the moon. Acoustic guitar, bass, drums, accordion, harmonica, electric guitar, piano, organ, xylophone, synthesizers, and occasional Flamenco hand-clapping work their way in and out of the songs, and their influences are wide and unpredictable.
The band was founded by Zilg in 2001, and was quickly joined by long-time collaborator Ed Purcelly on drums and Michael Liska on guitar and various other instruments. To date they have two releases, both released on the Low City label: "Where the walker runs down" (a split-CD EP w/The Roadside Graves, 2002) and the single "We'll make it somehow" (split 7" w/ Sparks Fly From A Kiss). The group has played at a number of well-respected venues in and around the tri-state area.
Hope, Star, & Browning have finished a third release, the band's first ever full-length album, titled "Earth, Be My Battleground!" They have no release date as they try to find a publisher for the recording. They currently offer a demo of the recordings at their live performances.
The current group (Nov 2006) is Rich on guitar and vocals; his wife Sandra Rubio on bass and vocals; Michael on accordian, guitar, and percussion; Rey Rivera on drums; William Sieke on piano; and Jeremy Benson on electric guitar. Past members and performers on the recordings include (but not limited to): Ed Purcelly, Ian Peacock, Jeff Neiss, Daniel Schlett, and Jeffery Lisciandrello. For booking information, or to purchace a recording, please do not hesitate to contact them at: hopestarbrowning@gmail.com .
