“The Hillside Gamblers’ ascent in the local music scene has been rapid, to say the least. Formed in August 2010, they’ve swiftly built up a name as a taut, rabble-rousing rockabilly act with wide appeal. You’ll see plenty of leather jackets and victory rolls at their shows, but it isn’t just greasers and rockabilly rucas on the dance floor. At about three to four gigs a month, you can find the Gamblers at places as diverse as Three Legged Monkey, Bikini Joe’s and Lips Lounge, winning crowds with a set that includes originals and covers. “Congrats go to Black Dots and Hillside Gamblers, the two bands who progressed after the first night of the third-annual So Not Psyched Battle of the Bands. That was Friday, Nov. 12, when I joined EPCC music director Armin Harrison and KLAQ’s Glenn Garza on the judges panel. All six bands put in a good effort, but the top two undoubtedly earned it. The Black Dots trudged through misfortune – their female lead singer was sick at home, so the drummer took the mic – to impress the crowd with their taut, groove-laden jams. Hillside Gamblers stole the show, however, when they absolutely mangled everyone with their bass-slapping, grandstanding, arresting rockabilly jams. Two words sprang to mind: hot damn. ”
