I don’t know who said time can heal a wound
Or if they ever had a wound like mine
Much looks the same yet everything has changed
As a year and a day just went flying
The neighbors and strangers, the friends who helped that time to pass
The kindness and sentiments, the memories and photographs
The laughter for stories from a million miles of traveling
The tears for the sudden way it all came unraveling

The lump in my throat from an unmended fence
Is easing now on evidence from the signs
“To ask then receive” and “mysterious ways”
No longer can be phrases pushed aside
As much as I’ve longed for two minutes more, full of words
And some assurance that everything I could say was heard
I’ve wanted more for all the anger and guilt to leave
So only the ache in my heart remains from the missing piece

No one can know which plans will be spoiled
Or when this mortal coil gets untied
Till then we do the best that we can do
And keep hanging on together through this life
Three generations in the faces of our children
The sweetest harvest of a future we’re still building
As we grow older sharing comforts so tender
