Bio
Not your typical “folkie” chick band, The Gristle Gals is a newly formed group (2008) that combines their backgrounds in classical, folk, bluegrass, gypsy, and jazz with a decidedly unique view of the world. The result? Something they like to call “Gypsy Grass”, but you can listen for yourself and decide. Whether busking for a small crowd on the street or performing before an audience of thousands, wherever they play, the Gristle Gals grab the attention of the audience with their lively, unique sound and their charisma. They are solid and experienced musicians who are at home in any venue. The Gristle Gals truly love what they do, and it shows!
About
Members:
Mandi Malone ~ Fiddle / Backup Vocals
Ashley Authement ~ Upright Bass
Gretchen Kunz ~ Vocals / Guitar / Flute
Nicki Handy ~ Mandolin
Mandi Malone was destined to be on stage from day one. She grew up playing in her family’s bluegrass band and never thought about doing anything else. With an eclectic taste in music and a drive to find a new sound, her violin style is constantly evolving. A gypsy at heart, Mandi has played with many touring bands, but is finally at home with the Gristle Gals.
Originally from New Orleans, Ashley Authement has been playing upright bass and making a name for herself around the front range since 2002. Drawn mostly to divergent styles of bluegrass and funk, Ashley’s non-conformist musical tastes lend themselves particularly well to the bohemian tendencies of the Gristle Gals.
Gretchen Kunz is a singer-songwriter and self-taught guitarist and flautist. She has been performing in assorted and sundry projects since 1998. Gretchen brings her diverse musical background and influences, and a unique writing style and voice, to the sound that is the Gristle Gals.
Nicki Handy comes to the Gristle Gals by way of Massachusetts, a bunch of instruments and many bluegrass picks. Her first piano performance at age 7 nearly ended her career in music when she stopped in the middle of Pretty Little Daisy. Alas, she commenced from the beginning and prevented her mother from having a heart attack. She’s been in Colorado playing bluegrass, old time and alt country for the past four years in bands and on porches.
