	Rating :   GOLDFISH ... store that name in your memory for longer than 3 seconds, cause these guys are going places. The duo of David Poole and Dominic Peters, both members of jazz outfit "Breakfast Included" have put together a monster debut electronic album "Caught in the loop". Both artists come from a jazz background, studying Jazz at UCT, but they've picked up some serious electronic skills along the way. Their combination of traditional jazz instruments such as upright Bass, flute and saxophones; with electronic devices such as samplers, a Groove box, vocoder and keyboards, results in a sound somewhere between jazz, house, electronica and down tempo chill out. All of which is topped with a distinct African flavour, setting them apart from other players in the genre. Personally, what I loved most is how some of the tracks have the ability to be both extremely chilled, yet so unbelievably uplifting at the same time, depending on the mood you're in. People often feel the need to punt South African artists, just because they are South African. But these guys don't need it. This album is on par and above the international levels, and they are already getting international exposure with their track, "Mbira beat", being selected by Virgin Mega store staff in the UK to feature on the compilation entitled, "Virgin down tempo Grooves". The album also comes with a DVD featuring an interview, along with a Vj set of the tracks. A while back I was in CD Wherehouse in Rosebank and asked a customer assistant what music was catching the customer's ears. The assistant mentioned a couple of laid-back guys from Cape Town whose jazzy electronica never failed to get peoples feet tapping when played in the shop. He didn't have to tell me the name of the group was Goldfish. Caught In the Loop perfectly captures the energy and sound of their live shows and is a wonderfully crafted opus that oozes style and musicianship.

Goldfish are a pretty unique phenomenon on the SA live music scene. While they are serious, heavy jazz musicians, and while they are undoubtedly a live act, the sounds they produce would more readily be associated with computers and turntables. Yes, Goldfish are a live electronic act, as much as that may sound like an oxymoron, and they consist of upright bassist Dominic Peters and saxophonist David Poole, along with various music-making toys and guest vocalists. The easiest comparison would be to St Germaine, but that's misleading since Goldfish have their own sound.

We say: Wow. This album shows that heavy jazz cats can make music that is accessible and bursting with groove, when they're in the mood. Caught in the Loop covers a lot of ground, from house to downtempo, and even makes a pit stop in tranceland on Highfalutin, which somehow combines elements of thumping trance with nu-jazz in a way that works, a difficult move to pull off. From the beautiful vocals on The Real Deal through to the grimy bass on All Night (an obvious single) and the delicious downtempo of Mbira Beat, this album has plenty of tasty moments and is a work of pure quality. Props also to whoever designed the excellent packaging.

Final word: Chilled, yes. Easy to get into, definitely. Generic, not even a bit. A rare accomplishment and a worthwhile addition to any music collection.

South African Sound Explosion, 4 Jul 2006 Reviewer: Andre Bryson - See all my reviews Goldfish are an extremely talented duo with a uniquely fresh jazzhouse sound that will have you moving from the first beat. The first track, 'The Real Deal', takes you to the rolling plains of Africa with its beautiful vocals, and an excellent combination of uplifting beats with thought-evoking piano. For the feeling of having relaxed afternoon drinks at a seaside cafe I recommend 'Last Tango In Paradise' and 'Four Forty Blues' as they are easygoing chill-out songs. 'Times May Change You' is a great intermediary song to play within the twilight zone between relaxed pre-drinks and partying. The mid-tempo, melodic nature of the song gives the feeling that one associates with the excitement of the evening to come. 'Mbira Beat' and 'Obey' carry similarities to the style of St. Germain (a great favourite of mine), yet once again African influence within the vocals has been used to create an original sound. The upbeat nature of many of the songs, including 'Love and Hate', 'Egyptology', 'All Night', 'Wait A Minute', `From Zanzibar With Love', and 'Highfalutin' is cleverly counter-poised by the hauntingly beautiful (and much acclaimed) 'Dream'. With amazing vocals and downtempo beats 'Dream' encapsulates a mood of seclusion and contemplation, projecting you into the vastness of Africa. 'Caught in the loop' takes its listeners on a journey through the African soundscape, fulfilling every desire that your ear could wish to hear. A must-have for any fan of lounge, jazz, house, or dance music.

Caught in the Loop

The number of compositions and the wealth of musical talent Goldfish have to draw from testifies to the value of sticking around and achieving real musical maturity.

Their comfortable, warm fusion melts snatches of rich homegrown mbaquanga vocals with the pulse of post-chillout beats and controlled electronic wizardry - you know, just enough synth to remind you that the aliens may already have landed, but not so much that you wish they'd just go home and let you sleep.

They're very Cape Town, and definitely appeal to a good looking clique. Think cocktails in Camps Bay or a sweaty night in an open air Greenpoint club's courtyard, not beer in Long Street.

"music you can really live to, wake up to and come down to"

Goldfish have their origins in long-life, heavily pasteurized jazz outfit Breakfast Included, who were nothing if not solid, and tended to score plenty of well paid gigs making an atmosphere. You'd expect to see them at the launches of music festival, playing the coffee shift at the same festivals, warming up the waterfront... they are respected, if mutedly.

Caught in the Loop is much fresher and more interesting than anything Breakfast Included did, though. The emotional appeal added by vocalists Melanie Scholtz, Monique Hellenberg, David Pool and in particular the deep-voiced Zimbabwean Max Vadima, combined with simple but perfectly evocative lyrics stir hopeful and, for want of a better word, "Summer" feelings. The varied intricacy of the dance beats playing friendly games with the melodies carried by sax, flute, guitar, keyboards and voice will wipe the sneer off all but the most stubborn rock fan's face. Let's hope it also reminds dance fans that there's more to chillout needn't be creepy or chilly, and that live electronica can give most mere recordspinners a serious run for their money.

The bonus DVD really is a bonus. It includes a geekishly charming interview with Goldfish and a very cool VJ version of the CD with graphics by Iaminawe, which mix heavily digitized forms with shots of table mountain, windsurfing, beach scenes and club scenes.

Goldfish are not just the coolest chilled dance act on the club scene this summer. Though they're fantastic live, this album proves they record like a dream. They make music you can really live to, wake up to and come down to for years to come.- Jean Barker

“Times may change you” Man I'm kicking back singing along to the slinky grooves of Caught in the Loop, a truly classy offering from SA duo Goldfish.  These Jazz muso, house head, funksters are onto something here. Combine gentle jazzy melodies, upbeat smoking house grooves and just a touch of blues along with simply gorgeous vocals and you're well... gonna find yourself caught in the loop! This debut album is a well crafted selection of down-tempo instrumentals, med-tempo breaks and four to the floor house grooves. Both Dom and Dave's musical class shine through with elements of Nu-Jazz and traditional African Jazz mixing brilliantly with bluesy Café jazz ala St Germain. But they're no copycats. Goldfish has their own sound and it is wonderfully South African with the sophistication of Europe.

This album is nothing compared to seeing these guys live. Not because of the quality of the recording. On the contrary, the production is superb. I say this, because watching these guys play is an experience unto itself, one that no mere disc could rival. Dom and Dave mix loops and live instruments flawlessly, playing the flute, double bass, keyboards and saxophone over beats that are the equivalent of any top shelf producer out there.

Dom also uses this thing called a theremin, which is a laser that alters the pitch and tone according to the position and angle of your hand in proximity to the beam. Did I mention there are only two of them? Go see a live set, and then buy the disc at the show along with the bonus DVD. You will thank me.

 Take two Capetonians trained in Jazz, add some samplers, vocoders, keyboards, upright bass, flute and sax and you have got Goldfish, SA's finest new electro artists. David Poole and Dominic Peters manage to combine electro and live music into a beat-fest of uplifting, jazzy, chilled-out tunage.

The album was mastered in the UK, so its got an international polish, but the music itself is grounded squarely in Africa, with elements of jazz, breakbeat, ambient and     dance. Comes with a DVD of trippy VJ effects. We dig these ous!
