Bio

AOI (Blue) is a new collaboration born in Japan in 2008 between the italian sax player Gianni Gebbia and the japanese pianist, singer and multinstrumentalist Eiko Ishibashi.
In 2009 italian virtuoso bass player Daniele Camarda joined the band and they have recorded together a cd entitled “ Maboroshi “ for the prestigious Kyoto based label F.M.N Sound Factory.
The band made a 20 concerts Japan Tour last August with guests like Jim O'Rourke and Yamamoto Tatsuhisa.
The music is a delicate mix between songs like structures, rythm and improvisation with lots of influences from different backgrounds from japanese pop to ethnical flavours especially those from Mediterranean area where Camarda and Gebbia come from.

Eiko Ishibashi  pianist, singer, drummer and multinstrumentalist, has been recording many cd’s in Japan and regularly collaborating with Tatsuya Yoshida from Ruins,Keij Haino,Gianni Gebbia, Yoshimitsu Ichiraku Dora Video, Jim O’ Rourke, Nanao Tavito and many others. She leads also a special project of mixed songs and improvisations with whom she released two cd’s: “ Works for Everything “ and  “ Drifting Devils (2008) in the same year she also made a duo cd with Tatsuya Yoshida from Ruins.


Daniele Camarda born in 1977 in Messina, he has been studying in Boston Usa at Berklee school and India. He collaborated with George Russell, Chris Cheek, Lionel Loueke, Ferenc Nemeth, Vardan Osepian, Jim O'Rourke, Yamamoto Tatsuhisa and many other artists. Camarda’s bass playing is very peculiar with lots of influences from jazz, indian and contemporay electronic music. He’s using some unique custom made instruments.


Gianni Gebbia born in 1961 has been playing in the field of avant jazz and improvised music since the early 80’s and he has been featured in the main european and international festivals as Banlieues Bleues, Total Music Meeting, Saalfelden, Le Mans, Northsea Jazz festival, Rive De Gier,Akut Mainz, Angelica, Noci, Roma, Yokohama, Vancouver Jazz festival and many others.

He has been recording and collaborating with hundreds of artists among which: Fred Frith, Peter Kowald, Gunther Sommer, Yoshimitsu Ichiraku, Satoko Fuji, Louis Sclavis, Jon Raskin, jim O’ Rourke, Heiner Goebbels,Gunther Sommer,Roy Paci, Pino Minafra, Ernst Reijsiger etc.

In 1990 he won the price of Musica Jazz Magazine as best italian new talent and after that is regularly on the top list of the same poll as best italian saxophone player. Gianni Gebbia’s bio is featured on the Encyclopedia of jazz by Richard Cook, The Penguin Dictionary of Jazz and the japanese anthology Best Saxophone players.
