“One of the sadder trends on the Suncoast over the past year has been the slow decline in the number and quality of local hip-hop shows. Nothing symbolized that more than the closing of The Tavern on Main this summer, although even that venue had already largely ceased to book the independent hip-hop shows that were once its bread and butter. Luckily, a few lights are still on, like the Bradenton duo Geno and Skunk Boogie. The pair spits that hot shit over spare, club-ready beats, but never sinks to lowest-common-denominator territory, even when they’re rhyming about the po-po and smoking grass. A few more acts like Geno and Skunk, and we could call this thing a trend. ”
