Bio
Frédéric Tavernier-Vellas est né en France en 1959. Après de solides études musicales classiques en hautbois, avec Philippe Pélissier notamment, il oriente sa recherche musicale vers le chant et, plus particulièrement, le chant sacré de Byzance. Il se forme auprès de grands maîtres et interprètes de cette musique comme le père Ioakim Grillis de Patmos, Maximos Fahmé d'Alep en Syrie, et surtout Lycourgos Angelopoulos le directeur du Chœur Byzantin de Grèce. Il préparera son diplôme de musique byzantine au conservatoire Philippos Nakas à Athènes sous la direction de ce dernier. Docteur en philosophie, il approfondit continuellement la théologie orthodoxe et il est l'auteur du Blog : http://www.theologie-orthodoxe.com Il a collaboré avec Lycourgos Angelopoulos pour la rédaction du livre Les Voix de Byzance paru aux éditions Desclée de Brouwer. Frédéric Tavernier-Vellas est membre de l'ensemble Organum de Marcel Pérès et participe régulièrement au travail et aux tournées de l'ensemble depuis une dizaine d'années. Après avoir enregistré un CD consacré aux chansons de Manos Hadjidakis, il a fondé un groupe consacré au répertoire du rebetiko d'Asie mineure et du Pirée.

Frédéric Tavernier-Vellas was born in France in 1959. After strong musical studies in classical oboe, with Philippe Pélissier particularly, he directs his research towards singing sacred music, and especially the byzantine music.
He went to great masters and interpreters of this music as the father Ioakim Grillis of Patmos, Maximos Fahmé of Aleppo in Syria, and especially Lycourgos Angelopoulos, director of the Byzantine Choir of Greece. He is graduate in Byzantine music from the conservatory Philippos Nakas in Athens.
Doctor of philosophy, he also studied the Orthodox theology and he is the author of the blog-www.theologie orthodoxe.com.
He collaborated with Lycourgos Angelopoulos for writing the book Voices of Byzantium published by Desclée de Brouwer. Member of the ensemble Organum of Marcel Peres Frédéric Tavernier Vellas regularly work with this Choir and make tours throughout the past ten years.
After registering, in 2001, a CD devoted to songs by Manos Hadjidakis, "Fotini Zoï", he founded a group dedicated to the repertoire of Asia Rebetiko minor and Piraeus, Ta Limania Xena with which he gave a series of concerts devoted primarily to the repertoire of Marcos Vamvakaris and Vassilis Tsitsanis.
He recorded recently in Athens, a new CD on the Dormition of St. John the Theologian whose release is planned for later in the month of December 2008. This CD is produced through association Egéo-Apmh and edited by Label Psalmus.
