BACKGROUND: After 15 years of service to the Boston music community as a recording and rehearsal space, Rear Window studio was devastated by two “hundred year” floods, within a space of 2 weeks in the Spring of 2010. On the night of March 14, there was a small trickle of water in the corner of one of the isolation rooms, but by the next morning, the entire main live room and both isolation rooms were under water. Vintage amplifiers and recording equipment were also submerged, and sustained significant damage. Thankfully, unlike the situation in Nashville, no musical instruments were lost. Thanks to the tireless efforts of many of the musicians who have been connected with the studio over the years, the water was eventually swept and pumped out, and the studio was able to function once again. However, in the wake of the flood, the studio was left with serious damage to the interior, and was found to be in need of extensive repairs to its outer walls. This necessitated partial demolition of the main isolation room, and excavation to the foundation 10 feet below the ground. The company insuring the studio refused to pay for repairs, due to the lack of specific flood insurance. FEMA refused to assist, as a recording studio is not a primary living space. The studio is currently fully operational, and sounds as great as ever, but in order to prevent future flooding it has been necessary to do extensive repairs to the foundation, and these are ongoing.
