Fishtank's music is flooded with influences

Members of Fishtank Phobia see their music as a melange of sounds and styles, a chance to merge different elements and create a unique sound that's still familiar.

"It's a little bit of metal, a little bit of blues," added Chris, who also plays lead guitar with the band Rathskeller, in which brother Jon plays percussion. "We just try to have fun with the music."

Fishtank Phobia will play Saturday as part of Rock at the North, an evening of music headlined by the Los Angeles band The Glass Plastiks, returning after missing a July gig due to airport delays. Adam and the Weatherfords also will perform as part of the show.

They'll share a collection of tunes reminiscent of the Beatles, Dave Clark Five and seminal British rockers XTC, along with moody psychedelic riffs and a fusion of punk and pop that easily merges music's past and present, a reflection of the band's diverse rock roots.

Band members have always experimented under the umbrella rock in an attempt to find their own style, and the end result is a raw, edgy, powerful sound that merges well with the area's music scene.

"The scene here is very diverse, and this band is very diverse," said Jon.

Fishtank Phobia plays original material created in a collaborative effort, with Chris penning lyrics and making up a majority of the guitar riffs and Harden adding a catchy bass line and background vocals.

Chris' lyrics are somewhat satirical, playful and fun, with a range of themes, although "most of the songs are love songs, about no particular person," he said.

Because the trio has such a longstanding relationship, they create together seamlessly, with each providing input on the final product, members say.

"We get along so well and we work together so well," said Chris. "Nobody questions my lyrics, and nobody questions the bassline."

"It's cool how it works," said Jon. "I'll throw in some drums, and somehow, it's birthed."

Both of the Fosters are serious about their musical futures, which is something new for Jon, who said, "When we first started it was just something jokingly to do to ease boredom."

But now that they've begun mastering their instruments, they see music as a possible future, a way to leave their mark in the world through the arts.

But still, becoming mainstream is not on the list of goals for members of Fishtank.

"We'd rather not be on MTV," said Chris, with a broad grin. "But i think it would be fun to tour with Fishtank. We're doing exactly what we like to do."

Fishtank Phobia will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the North Theatre, 629 North Main St., along with Adam and the Weatherfords and the headliners, The Glass Plastiks.

Tickets are $10, with those who saved their ticket stub from the July Glass Plastiks show admitted free.
