Fire Star

Fire Star is the musical brainchild of Brantford-born Chris White; a self-taught singer songwriter whose impassioned lyrics and multi-instrumental talents are being heard throughout Southern Ontario. After much time spent completing his degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo, Chris decided at long last that it wasn’t really what he wanted to do with his life. Luckily for Chris the University-sponsored community radio station, CKMS, took a liking to his music.

In November of 2007 Chris was awarded the Matt Osborne Memorial Award for Emerging Talent, along with a sum of money to put towards the musical project of his choice. Having only partial success recording on his own, Chris took his prize and songs to Wayne Bond, a gifted and highly sought-after producer and drummer from Kitchener. Enthused with what Chris had composed, Wayne helped him record, produce, and mix eight carefully selected songs from a field of twenty-five. Those lucky eight would become Fire Star’s debut self-titled CD. Wayne happily provided drums and percussion, while Chris filled in the rest with guitars, bass, banjo, mandolin, and vocals, with a little keyboard help from long-time friend Melissa Davis.

The results exceeded all expectations. Ranging from upbeat acoustic rock songs like Paper Crane and What Sweet Luck, thoughtful ballads in Dreamer and Little Star, and the folk flavour of Blue Petals and Boy, the album shows Chris’ fondness for Led Zeppelin in its diverse arrangements. Coupled with lyrical styling similar to Matthew Good and Sarah Harmer, his songs give the audience plenty to think about. Originally written to sound full during a solo acoustic performance, the songs take on an impressive new scale with full instrumentation. Now receiving airplay in Brantford and his second home of Kitchener-Waterloo, Chris is looking to make a mark with his well-crafted debut CD under the banner of Fire Star.
