About
Since 1998, my artistic works have involved the creation of conceptually based poems, monologues, and songs that narrate the experiences of my life as well as those of my family and friends. In my work, I seek to deconstruct cultural stereotypes, explore sociopolitical avenues, address both domestic as well as sexual violence, and redefine gender roles of masculinity/femininity. These themes are often used to actively engage in community events and fundraisers throughout the United States, South America, and most recently Ghana, West Africa. As a youth mentor and touring teaching artist, I believe that in order, “To become truly immortal, a work of art must escape all human limits.” (Giorgio de Chirico) In order to escape these constraining boundaries, I think it is important to create works with universal messages that everyone can relate to while invigorating innovation within the aesthetic of Hip-Hop arts and culture.
Of all my works up to date, I am most proud of my one-man Hip-Hop musical entitled Penumbra, as it has been a continuous work in progress for the past three years. This project is important to me because it is ultimately my story. It is the telling of how my family immigrated to the United States from Puerto Rico and how my ancestors were colonized centuries ago. It intimately analyzes my relationship with my father who was in prison while I was growing up. It also speaks about my grandfather who taught me how to play chess and eventually inspired me to write my first poem. The show's vulnerability and brutal honesty are things that have helped me grow tremendously. I think its ability to use Spoken Word/Poetry, Hip-Hop, Theater, and Dance to heal simulataneously challenges each of these art forms to progress beyond themselves.
